I really enjoyed reading this book. I liked the characters and the plot, though J felt like it took a good second for the plot to start moving.

Rounding up to 3 for all the queer rep (mc is bi, female li only shows interest in girls, pretty much every side character is queer), but I think this was way younger YA than expected? It was very adventure and plot driven and not character driven, meaning there's very little character development, even for the MC, so honestly I didn't really care about any of them. I actually found most of them irritating. Plus, insta-love. Blech.

rep: bi mc, sapphic romance, trans/nonbinary side characters, pretty queernorm 'verse
cw: blood, gore, immolation, blood magic involving self harm

This book had a very interesting premise, but I found the pacing to be off and the romance to be too instalove. It also involved a love triangle that would have been amazing as a poly vee with the mc as the hinge.

What I liked about this book was the mc going after power and in some cases admitting to herself she liked how it felt to be powerful. I also appreciated her having sex when she wanted to, and that no other characters shamed her for it. The magic system was cool, and I would have loved to see it explored more deeply, especially the mc's emotions about everything.

It’s not every day you get to loose yourself in a bisexual experience with the main character. Usually I feel myself falling for the love interest and a friend as someone drawn to the dark and mysterious male and then lusting for the passionate and fiery female. In this story the main character follows my thoughts and stumbles into a great mystery with fantasy. I loved this adventure, but I hunger for more. I hope we get to visit The Silence again in the future.

There are the seeds of a good story here, but it was not put together well at all.

The flaws of the main characters aren't at all the main focus of the book, but it's so unbelievably hard not to focus on them while I'm reading. These characters, even the ones that are hundreds or thousands of years old, and their relationships, are contrived and juvenile. There are several scenes where the characters act in a way that just doesn't make sense for them, and could be fleshed out in so many better and more compelling ways. There were a lot of times in the first 50-100 pages where I considered putting this down.

Yet, I didn't. I couldn't. While there were so many things I took issue with, I couldn't help but be intrigued by the story, the mystery, and had to keep reading to know what happened. This is beautifully written in terms of scenery and world building, this world feels almost real. The descriptions are painted perfectly, immersing you in exactly what Lena is experiencing. And it's very magical. I haven't read *too* much fantasy, but the fantasy elements of this book felt unique and were just plain fun to read about. I loved the idea of an almost sentient dark magic forest and exploring the cities that dwell within. Overall, while I had my issues with some things, this was a quick and fun read that I don't regret picking up!

Just kind of too fast and too slow at the same time. It’s all over the place and yet so boring. Also the grammar and writing style was just not for me.
