Didn’t love the writing style and took a long time for me to feel a connection with the characters. even Jeanne who is one of the main characters I feel like we barely see her inner thoughts throughout the book. interesting story though. and I did cry so not a total bust

i am BEGGING you to read this book. if i could give it 10000 stars i would. it is heartbreaking, emotional, intense and just so powerful. it shows the histories of Indigenous Peoples being colonized by the French with deep connections to traditional Indigenous teachings and Christianity and just HOLY SHIT. easily one of the best books i’ve ever read

“He’s grown to accept that her heartbeat is connected to this land that he can only walk on.”
so so so good. there is so much sadness and frustration in this book. there is a point in the book where they are close to starvation and pierre says he will find a way to help and marie snaps and says he can’t help it is his people who are the reason for this in the first place. I am distraught in the best way possible.

Danielle Daniel writes of the holistic relationship between nature and human so well, it’s one of the strongest factors of the book. The plot line and dialgue wasn’t as compelling but still good. The characters’ internal dialgues about their struggles are moving. I was captivated by Jeanne’s increasing suspenseful twists towards the end, and I appreciated both Pierre’s & Marie’s development towards the end.
Graphic: Self harm
