Smoldering Hunger

Donna Grant

3.99 AVERAGE

Another great addition to the Dark King Series. "Smothering Hunger" picks up right where the previous book, "Soul Scorched" left off. I'm going to take a minute to say that technically, you can read these books on their own, however, personally, I believe, you will get significantly better understanding of the larger picture of what is transpiring if you read the entire series. This being said, if you started reading the series here with SMOLDERING HUNGER, you will want to go back anyways to rad the previous stories.

Donna, the author, continues to entice the readers with each page. The heroine, Sophie, is independant, smart and knows what she wants. While she has suffered in the past, she is ready to move forward. The hero, Darius is happy killing the Dark Fae yet is memorized by Sophie and while the physical attraction is evident, he can't help wonder if there might be more...

Oh Rhi!!! This is another example of where Donna's writing skills excel... Rhi, while technically a secondary character, has develop a following which adores the character and can't wait to learn who her Dragon King is! SERIOUSLY Donna! You're messing with our EMOTIONS!!!

The Reapers make more of an appearance in this installment and OMG, talk about the potential for a twist swirl Donna has caused! That's all I'm saying!!

All and all ... the main arc of defeating the Dark Fae and Ulrik continues. It's now a matter of when and how.

Narrator: Antony Ferguson continues to do a great job with the series, though there are a few mispronunciation with the character's name. Also, the way he does the females' voices sometimes comes across a bit nasally.

Only a few more books left in the series....

The end of Passion Ignites was really intense. All of the characters found themselves in pretty precarious positions. After all that went down, Edinburgh's population of Dark Fae seem to have decreased dramatically. There are stragglers and Darius has stayed behind to see to those and protect the humans. There also seems to be another reason he doesn't want to leave. All reason leaves him and he goes to Sophie with the intention of just getting her out of his head.

Unfortunately, their tryst has been burned into both of their heads. Darius stays away but he is very confused about the feelings he has for Sophie. He has had a previous life. It can't be happening again. Darius puts himself through hell for weeks forbidding himself from going anywhere near Sophie, but then Ulrick gets involved. Why Ulrick now has an interest in Sophie is a cause for great concern. Darius has to let Sophie know she's in danger, but he intends to keep his distance.

I think that lasted about a paragraph! Ulrick's plans are so complex, he is keeping the Kings in constant turmoil. He has a civilized meeting with Con, but it neither confirms nor denies any of the King's suspicions of Ulrick's plans. Ulrick uses the Dark Fae as if they are his own personal guards. When they get involved with our main heroine, I get scared to death. Things work themselves up to a fevered pitch and Con & Ulrick get together again but in a less civilized manner. Things are getting close. This battle with Ulrick, Merrick & Con is coming very soon.

We also have all of our other side characters that we have grown to love. Rhi, who I think is everyone's favorite, comes to some conclusions. Her actions kind of make me wonder what her intentions are, and who she is really aligned with. Then we have her watcher. We learn a little more about him. I'm interested to see if this watcher's story is going to be included in the Dark Kings' series or if he will have his book in Grant's Reaper series. This situation could make a great split between the two.

In the end, Smoldering Hunger is another great installment of the Dark Kings series. The progression of war story line, the restrictions on the Kings, and the building of Darius and Sophie's relationship all nicely put together. Let's not forget our Rhi. Her portions of the book keep you wondering and maybe a little shocked! Everything is coming at a fevered pitch now and I'm getting really nervous on who is going to be left standing! This review was originally posted on Rantings of a Reading Addict

Darius and Sophie had a quick and steamy relationship that started when he came to the hospital to ask for help with Lexi. After that they meet on and off for and tried to hide their growing feelings. Ulrik pushed them together and made them admit their feelings.

I liked Sophie. She was very career driven and is a healer at heart. I liked her friend Claire a lot too. Darius is the strong silent type who has been sleeping away the years. He denies his feelings, like most of the Kings do, for as long as he can. I liked that he came out of his depressed shell that he has held for thousands of years.

Rhi is getting better and letting go but will this be a good thing or bad? I can't wait to see what is going to happen next

I'm going to be honest with you. I struggled a lot with this book. I ended up liking it but this series is getting really repetitive. Each book has had the same struggles. Ulrik is going to go after the female main character to hurt the male main character. Con is going to continue keeping the Kings in the dark with half-truths while continuing to hope that the rest of the kings won't fall in love and find their mates. We are going to forever be reminded that Rhi and her Dragon King had a great love but that King is still absent and nameless and I'm beginning to think we will never know who he is. The weapon that the Dark once sought is still hidden and being kept a secret from most of the Kings. See what I mean? All of these things have been at the forefront of each book and I’m getting sick of the repetition.

Each book has done wonderful at having different kinds of heroines and Kings with different personalities. And I've really liked the romances in each one but I'm to the point with this series that something needs to happen. We've gotten a couple of really big reveals but it hasn't been enough to offset the repetition. Also, Rhi is driving me crazy with her decisions and waffling back and forth. I get that she's lonely and had her heartbroken, but why the hell is she being pushed toward the person who tortured her? That's just so not okay.

Okay. Rant over. Let's focus on other parts of this book. I ended up really liked Darius and Sophie together. They're two very broken people that help make each other whole. I didn't like them together at the beginning because they were both being unemotional yet obsessive at the same time. I get that they both have baggage but it was a weird way to go about them coming together. This whole book kind of felt off, honestly. What I absolutely loved about this book was Sophie's friend, Claire! I hope we see more of her in the future books!

As I said earlier in this review, Rhi is driving me crazy with her choices but I will say that I'm happy that she finally made a decision in this book. I'm just not happy with some of the other things she's been doing. Honestly, I still want her to end up with her Dragon King again even though he's been absent from her life. We've been shown in previous books that he's still doing little things for her. I just want to finally know who he is and why he chose to break it off with her. There has to be a valid reason. Although, I am kind of shipping Rhi with her Reaper shadow, Daire. If she doesn't get back with her King, I'm totally on board for them getting together.

Overall, I liked it and I'll probably keep reading this series. Because let's be honest, I want to know what happens with the characters and I want them all to get what's coming to them whether it's a happily ever after or a slow, painful death. But what I really want... actually what I need this series to do is to move on from where it is and leave some of the repetition behind. We need more forward momentum because things have seriously stalled.

Initial Thoughts 2/11/16-I had a hard time getting into this one but once it had my interest it kept it. I'm still figuring out my thoughts on this so full review to come later.
