Great read but might make you sad or frustrated if you're a woman. Focuses on the difficult choices and unfair treatment of women and lower classes.

I loved this book! Even if we find it difficult to put ourselves in the life of a young maid these days, I still found Griet to be a successful character. I liked her character, but don't expect a heroine who breaks all the rules. She has to find her way in a world dominated by men and class differences. For those who read the book: be sure to check out the stunning paintings by Vermeer and Delft in general, it makes reading an even cooler experience!
Personal opinion
tw misogyny: Most men take advantage of women here, which some reviewers have already described as "romanticizing" misogyny or child abuse (bc of the young age of the maids). In my opinion, the book does not romanticize this, that was horribly the case at the time, so you should read this book with a critical attitude towards these topics. I've also raised my eyebrows in anger at times.
A successful book that accompanies a clever young girl who has to find her way between narrowing expectations.
