This book started out as a cozy series of journal entries from Emily outlining her journey to document a little known type of fae. It was quaint and I was happy to be witnessing her highs and lows. However around the 50% mark things take a turn and the main characters are trying to fix a problem, well multiple problems. At this point I felt like the journal style entries didn’t quite suit the story and it would have been better to just show the action happening vs. coming up with reasons why they would have written about it in the journal. While Em & Wendell were unique and lovable characters I also felt like the romance between them felt rushed and almost unnecessary. I enjoyed this book but it was SO hyped up I do find myself a bit disappointed.

3,5 stars.

There were some parts I really enjoyed and some parts that not felt as interesting. I did like the banter between the FMC and MMC, the writing style, and the accurate (as far as they went, at least) references to academia.

However, the environment felt flawed.

- They went to the north of Norway (?) but people's names didn't feel Norwegian to me.
- Obviously there is a lot of snow there, but as soon as it snowed 30 cm, the roof of a building collapsed. How is this logical for a place where people are very used to snow????
- I get that the setting is fictional, but when there are some very accurate references to academia and the FMC thinks it's a good idea to stab one of the Folk she's there to OBSERVE and learn about (observe as a research method!!!), I lost it. How, in what universe would any research ethics committee approve of such methods? All the academic references kind of went downhill from there and the book lost some of its magic to me.
