I’m so utterly in love with this book that I’m considering starting it again immediately until I can go get the next one tomorrow. I hesitate to call this a cozy fantasy in spite of what other reviews say, mainly because I have never encountered a cozy fantasy that has real stakes endangering characters. Likewise, faeries have never been my number one fantasy fascination (I’ve always been drawn to witches), but I may seek out more in the future because this so thoroughly enchanted me. Often the romance overtakes other genres but this felt like the perfect dose for me.

Emily is such a rich character who is sometimes hampered by her neurodivergence but in a roundabout way it leads to a wonderful found family. Wendell is endlessly charming and I adore Poe and the villagers. Watching Emily grow to love them all and care for them in her own way (even if it wasn’t her first, second or third thought) made my heart grow three sizes.

This book omg amazing. Soft cozy academia fantasy with grumpy x sunshine and 'touch her you die' and fairies. Emily is also 100% autistic, I'm not sure if that's something the author has said and I've never seen anyone else saying that she is but reading it she absolutely is.

At first I was not taken by the "matter of fact" and neutral approach of the story. I thought the first two chapters were dry and simple, but I can attest that is the author writing the world through the eyes of the main character and is very apropos. By chapter three, I was smitten and devoured every page.
As a lover of fae of all kinds, I was tickled and delighted by the smoothness and almost natural involvement of the fae in the story. None of it was out of place (which is saying something, given the nature of some of the scenes) and it all blended and came into place perfectly. With such expressions of high fantasy, it is hard to mistake some parts
like an animal cloak that melts in the heat, but reluctantly gives the wearer what they need
as being absurd and not belonging, like suddenly seeing a majestic and shining pegasus in a normal field. This magic, however, was laced in so naturally that it naturally belonged and was wonderful.
