A quick read but felt lacking overall. Also are we just going to ignore James essentially keeping Theresa captive in space????
Maybe I didn’t read the summary close enough before I started this audiobook, because I had no idea what I was getting into. I didn’t even know before I started that it was narrated by one of my favorite audio performers, Rebecca Lowman. Ultimately, her voice was the only reason I stuck with this book.
I wish the narrative had stayed with young June’s story longer—her struggle to be understood by her aunt, her delightful relationship with her uncle, her efforts to fit in at school—I so wanted to know more of her growing up, coming into her confidence and brilliance.
Instead, we jump forward six years, and the sci-fi technobabble takes over. I was too busy reeling from the disappointing time jump to invest in the conflict, which I pretty much figured out anyway.
Thank you to Rebecca Lowman, for reading to me for the past few days. My main takeaway from this book is that I’d be happy listening to her read just about anything.

I am so obsessed with this book! I knew going into it that it was a Jane Eyre retelling (like Jane Eyre meets The Martian) so it was fun to track all the parallels between June’s journey in this novel and Jane’s. And it’s all there, down to the porridge! So tracking was fun and all but this story has so much of its own life and spark that you don’t even need to know anything about Jane Eyre going into it. In fact, midway through I totally forgot about JE because I was HOOKED on June’s journey from her aunt’s house to the training school and her struggles there (think: boarding school with math and science while also doing water tank training for space walks) and then we get to June’s first adventures at the space station and ugggggh I could have stayed there forever. The camaraderie, the hovering question over the missing mission, and June’s feverish desire to find the problem with her uncle’s fuel cells in order to bring the others home – if they’re still alive. I won’t spoil it. Highly recommend!
This was a 3.5 because it did make me gasp out loud, made my heart race a few times, and I had to catch my breath after a scene or two.
But the stylistic choice to not include quotation and having very few dialogue tags, plus the time jumps just as I was getting used to things... all pulled me out of the story too much. I could have connected with the characters better if their emotions were more clear. A lot is left to interpretation in this area, which I do like using my imagination, however occasionally it's nice to be able to enjoy a story without overthinking it.
But overall, very worth reading.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed reading it, but for a story about a brilliant astronaut and space adventurer, it just didn't...travel far enough.
slow-paced
i would’ve given this 5 stars if it wasn’t for the ending… but it’s also 2am so i’ll think about it more. ok now i think it's probably closer to 3 stars BUT i haven't read jane eyre so after talking to jen who has, i think it's fine? i liked it. i get the critique but it was fun....i had a good time. the lesbians were the most interesting people <3 the main character was fun and her main romance was irrelevant but who cares! it barely existed.
