lost me in the second half. i wish the whole book was about astronaut boarding school!
Maybe three and a half? This is really well written with a beautiful voice and lovely imagery. I loved the main character and was enthralled the whole way through. But the ending fell flat for me, as did the romance (that’s not what I was reading it for, but I just really didn’t like her partner in any way). If the author makes this a duology, with a second book detailing the next step, I’d feel better about the ending. It’s a natural end but there are also plenty of unanswered questions.

There's a lot to like about this science fiction story: interesting science and tech, strong female characters, moving descriptions of space travel and engineering and creativity. But ultimately, it just doesn't deliver on the adventure suggested by the setup (the rescue of a crippled mission), and the "fiery love affair" promised in the synopsis is more of a very slow and subtle burn of a relationship. Still, an enjoyable read (and a gorgeous cover!), and I look forward to seeing this author's next work.

Did I love that this is space Jane Eyre? Absolutely. And with that understanding the beats make way more sense.
However the plot still feels pretty slow and the ending rushes up out of nowhere.
Wonderful premise but could be done better

So much set up for the most interesting parts of the story to be rushed
June is an orphan of 12 living with her aunt and uncle. Her uncle happens to be in aeronautics engineering and takes June under his wing. June is brilliant and learns a lot from her uncle until he passes away. Her aunt, who only has so much patience for the curious June, sends her to the aeronautics boarding school named for her uncle.
June, and the aeronautics world, have been haunted by the complete communications breakdown by the crew of Inquiry, a mission that had set out to travel deep into space. Can June and her fellow crewmates save the crew of the Inquiry when everyone else has lost hope?
I love a good space story about exploration and the dangers of space. I expected to like this book no matter what to be honest. I read through it pretty quickly and the second half of the book kept me turning those pages, which I love! June's character was incredibly interesting and the challenges they faced were intriguing and believable. I thought that the pubisher's summary was terrible and didn't even portray the story very well. Note that this book is written a little different, with no quotation marks. For some this may be a problem, but you just have to pay attention a little bit more. I didn't have much trouble. I definitely recommend this book!

This book never quite lived up to the synopsis on the back of the book for me. While the description is true, it never reads as exciting or urgent as advertised.
Our main character, June starts out as a 12 year old girl, mourning her astronaut uncle’s death and mesmerized by the latest space mission that has lost all communication. The crew is believed to be dead and it’s blamed on the faulty fuel cells that her uncle invented. She knows in her gut they are still alive and makes proving this her underlying goal as she grows up.
My favorite part of the book was probably the first third. June gets early admittance to an astronaut boarding school. YES. Think Space Camp meets private school, so basically the best book setting ever.
After the school section finishes, it jumps ahead to her on her first space mission. I figured things were really about to go down, but it never really did. No matter how much the book would describe something or actions taken in the space station, they never made any sense to me. Plus, they never seemed to report back to anyone back at Earth. I’m like, don’t y’all have a NASA or something?
Another thing that made it hard was that there are no quotation marks. That’s usually not a deal breaker for me, but there were several times I had to reread conversations to figure out who was who or even what was dialogue or narrative.
It’s a super unique premise with a stunning cover, but the plot never wowed me like I hoped it would. Thank you to @netgalley and @randomhouse for giving me the opportunity to read this!
