“...but i still felt...what? Untethered. Adrift. More like a speck of dust than a person.”

In the Quick has an almost dreamlike quality to it. I think that the book blurb and how it was marketed has truly done a disservice to this book. It’s a character-driven, literary fiction story set in space, not sci-fi and not a romance.

Instead this book is about June and her growth from an awkward but ambitious 12 year old obsessed with mechanics and space to a young woman who is an astronaut searching for answers as to what happened to the Inquiry mission 6 years ago. The entire book is told as if you are sitting in June’s fascinating brain. I’m not in any way scientific or mathematically inclined so I loved seeing how people who think like June think.

@katehopeday was gracious enough to join the #evergreenreaders to discuss her book and we all were absolutely charmed by Kate! Y’all she went to adult space camp to research this book! How cool is that?! We’re also now trying to recruit her to join our book club.

Ohhhhhhh, this didn't work for me. I think part of that was because it wasn't at all what I expected, and part of it because it felt like, for such a plot and such a "tense" situation...not a lot happened? The pacing didn't quite work for me; I'd say this is very much lit fic more than dystopian sci fi, and for how much of it felt like it was about the writing and the minutia, it didn't wow me. I did the audiobook, though, which might have impacted my take!

This is one that I really wanted to like. While not technically exciting like a lot of science fiction tends to be these days, I found a lot of kinship with June. Read as 'women's science fiction' I think this is an alright title.

But the lack of quotation marks was more obnoxious than I was anticipating.

The writing itself is a piece of art though.

Hi yes, this book was so acutely written and I loved it. June was a brilliant heroine and the plot was deeply thought out and wonderfully executed.

I think the description of this book is a little misleading- this is not a romance as described in the synopsis. Yes, there is a brief look at a relationship but that doesn't even happen until part three and if it happened sooner or had been given more space in the book it would thrown off the entire trajectory of where the main character and the plot are headed. James and June had a intense similar way of looking at time, space and the earth which was really interesting to read about from beginning to end.

This story is told in four parts: 1 when June is 12 years old, 2 when June first starts out at the space station, 3 when she is sent to the pink planet with her uncles former student, and four when she sets off on her own after an explosive fight. I think having the book in this layout helped move the plot forward and made the book feel like a thriller.

Overall I think for the amount of research alone that the author had to do to write this book is insane to think about. It was inspiring to learn about what it's truly like to be in space and everything that these candidates go through just to be considered for the position. I highly recommend this read if you loved The Martian, Apollo 13 and Gravity.
medium-paced

This was so boring and redundant and I rolled my eyes every 30 seconds it felt like. Synopsis didnt feel true to the story at all. If you enjoy reading about people building things then this is probably a great book for you but if not, I don’t recommend.
