I'm DNF'ing. I was really stuck on something that seems so basic in designing and engineering a very complex vehicle, and its various components and systems, that would have high safety and quality standards (why would no one have NOT have factored in the effect of vibrations?!?! What about destructive and non-destructive testing of a variety of stresses upon materials and systems?!!") Never mind the whole pink planet thing and lack of FTL in this world.
So, I'm not bothering to finish this story that claims to be science fiction. The literary side of things seemed to work, at least as far as I got in the book, but the science and engineering side of things almost immediately didn't work for me.

I was torn between 3 or 4 stars. Ended up with 4 stars. Books about space travel are hard to write (balancing details with believability) but I thought the author did a great job with that. (No spoilers but the protagonist is trying to solve a fuel cell problem in a space ship. And even I could follow along.) Why I was unsure about 4 stars is that many of the other characters feel a tad one dimensional or just so obviously there to push the protagonist along. But overall an interesting read, and I think even people not particularly interested in space travel books or science fiction would like it.
I loved June and her fascination with taking things apart to see how they work, and putting them together better. I loved the way Day shows the meticulous and repetitive revisions that scientists must give their work in order for breakthroughs to come to light. Her loneliness and isolation lead her to interpret sound transmissions thought to be static - She discovers that they may, in fact, be proof that a crew of astronauts, lost years before, may not be dead.
This story is set some time in the future when space travel is easier, and somehow there's no oversight of space stations from Earth. Things happened up there and the astronauts were able to keep secrets and that was odd. Also, the love story did not work for me. I wish Day had left it out. I would rather have seen the story through to the recue of the lost astronauts.

There are a surprising number of mediocre reviews of 'In the Quick' and I imagine some of them are the result of readers looking for more science fiction in their science fiction. But I found the novel interesting, the central character, June, well written, and her journey engaging, if not gripping... but the suggestion that the novel has “echoes of Station Eleven, The Martian, and, yes, Jane Eyre” is more than a bit of a stretch.
The plot was simplistic but I enjoyed hearing about June’s space adventures
This book took me on a journey.
First, I wanted to become an astronaut because the main character June made it sound so appealing. Then I wanted to throw this book away become the take-off scene was so atmospheric that I felt like throwing up. And then the book ended and I'm stuck sitting here wondering wtf I just read and thinking about living on a pink planet with numbing air.
Sooo...maybe this is the point in this review where I should tell you that the synopsis is kinda misleading. DON'T go into this book expecting lots of romance because it doesn't occur until the very end and even then it is very little. DO go into this book expecting to go on a character exploration of June and her life's work of fixing things and becoming an astronaut.
I personally really enjoyed getting to follow June as a character and Kate Hope Day did a fantastic job in making this book so atmospheric and making me feel like I was right there the whole time! Also, the cover is absolutely stunning and I wish this book were sitting front and center on my shelves, but alas, I must wait months till I can hold this beautiful book in my hands!

Growing up around her engineer uncle, June discovers her knack for invention and joins his space exploration company after his death. Turning into a brilliant and capable scientist, she soon becomes obsessed with an old mission that went awry with its astronauts presumed dead. A hypothesis she disagrees with. As her work continues in space, she ends up on a pink-hued moon with another scientist named James. She tries to work alongside him to solve the missing ship's power problems but she finds herself caught between the two, leading her to discover who she is and what she really wants.
This was very beautifully written, I enjoyed the humanity of this book. I liked June and her intelligence, just as much as I liked her kindness. The space theme can feel so over done and I didn't feel that way with this novel at all. It's very precise and simple, but very endearing. A good story.
I do think that the description, however, is misleading. This is definitely not a love story in the way it's projected to be. There is a love story but it's not the main theme. The love arc doesn't even begin till the the final act. It's more so her journey through her expectations of life and who she wants to be. More coming of age than romance.

This reads like a sci-fi story written by an English major with no science training. Unsatisfactory.
jane eyre... in space!!
which, first of all, the translation of gothic lit to space lit is.......... so insanely big brain. i really love june's characterization, and a lot of the early half of the book reminded me a lot of why i loved the queen's gambit - ""cold"" girls who are insanely smart and probably neurodivergent is like, one of my fav protagonists to get to hang out with. i really thought as a retelling that this was well done but i do struggle to see how anyone who doesn't love jane eyre would enjoy this. and while i think the plot points certainly tie itself well to jane eyre, there is some emotion and some context missing here that i think hurt it, namely in relation to this books version of the Attic Wife (tm).
i really loved the writing here tho, and the sci-fi here is neither hard nor soft - it's technical but never too much, and reading about the physical effects of space travel was incredibly cool. i usually cannot do sci fi/space lit and reallyyyy enjoyed this, which i think is the best review i could give to it!
