In which Miss Grey discovers laudanum is essential to function as a governess. Particularly when your charges are seven strange children whose mother disappeared in strange circumstances, whose father is an emotionally-distant sky captain, and whose remote estate appears to be the home of something quite unholy. There is a lot of imaginative fun here, many homages to The Sound of Music, an unexpectedly pragmatic heroine, a narrow escape or two, and a surprise at the end. There is a little less emotional connection between the characters in this installment, and more humor. Again, we get to see the origins of one of the characters in the first book, and to understand her a little better, but it is all prequel and takes us no further.

I love Miss Jane, I really do. What a funny and creepy and wild story!

Yes, amazing! Talk about a great fleshing out of character. I could read things written in Ms. Grey's voice all day.

What an utterly delightful read! I loved Jane, the heroine of our story, she was buckets of fun. These are the kind of stories I could read by the truckload. Did anyone else spot the Sound of Music similarities or was that just me? ;-)
