This was exactly the kind of short, accessible, fantasy book that I was hoping to read on my vacation! It is a dark, but also really sweet, fairy tale retelling. There's a royal family, knights, fairies, and changelings and the story unfolds slowly (but it's a novella, so not THAT slowly!). I loved it from beginning to end! I've read all of T. Kingfisher's horror and she is one of my very favorite authors. Now I know that I love her fantasy, too, so I can't wait to read more.

There’s a princess locked away in a tower, trapped in a magical sleep. And maybe, the world is safer for it.

Toadling is a human raised by fairies tasked with bestowing a gift onto a newborn child. But when she accidentally messes up the words, she is trapped in a centuries-long vigil to stop a monstrous child from destroying everything. 

This book was such a unique twist on Sleeping Beauty and I loved the lore about the water faeries that raised Toadling. She was also one of my favorite protagonists ever.
