I adore Cora! What a kindred spirit - and all the extremely likeable characters in this book.

The writing just wasn't for me.

Very well written so it's a good read in that sense, but the storyline is pretty dull. I will also add that the ending is almost the dullest part.

Lovers of victorian fiction will probably dig this. It took a lot for me to get into it. The writing was lovely, and there were moments that struck me well, but it honestly took me about 40% into the book before i hit a moment i truly enjoyed and felt engaged by. There is something lacking in the characterization to me in the early half of the book, and i'm left struggling to root for the main character that seems like it's being forcefed down my throat that she's this character and person to be admired (so! different! sublimating! tomboy childhood!). 50-75% is wonderful, and the end tails off a bit but I sitll enjoyed. Basically? glad i read it, but a struggle for me.

This novel had a lot going on. Like, a lot. But every character was really complex, interesting, and authentically themselves. Imperfect, but no one was truly, fully unlikable. It’s hard to capture it exactly, but that complexity was lovely. It felt a bit like a combination of character studies, and it was very well done. I’d absolutely recommend it.
