it's safe to say that the book wasn't what i expected at all, but i found myself connecting to the characters all the same. it definitely gets quite dark, but in my opinion it never feels gratuitous (unlike other books iykyk). the writing is very beautiful as well, and i always love reading own voices.
my biggest critique about the book: the cover. what even is this atrocity?? i don't want real people in book covers, much less real faces mushed together all awkwardly.

Wow!! I loved everything about this book. The prose was absolutely stunning, the characters were beautifully crafted, nuanced, multifaceted people - they really felt alive! Mungo's character in particular was haunting: his kindness and sincerity made him so deeply loveable. Douglas Stuart is an insanely talented storyteller; I was gripped from the first chapter. A truly gut-wrenching, harrowing tale of growing up queer in 1990's Glasgow, but also one of the most touching stories I've read this year. This one is going to stay with me for a while.

a devastating story of love, loss, poverty and human connection. The characters and their lives feel so real, it hurts. It definitely made me both angry at the world, frustrated and extremely sad, so check trigger warnings and proceed with caution. I think it's a book you should read but I can't tell you more than that. Just read it and cry ðŸ˜
