douglas stuart you are evillllll.

this book was so, so sad. the entire reading experience felt like there was a cavity inside of my chest, preventing me from getting a complete breath in.

stuart is a clearly skilled author, whose use of prose detailed such visceral, atmospheric, bleak images. the reason why i am giving this a 3.5, though, is because it sadly did not connect with me. i never felt fully immersed in what was going on—it felt like i was observing the story through a looking glass rather than being in the shoes of mungo himself.

4.5! really loved this book, but was difficult to read at times. ugh sweet angel boy, the ending was perfect

“Young Mungo” left me absolutely speechless. While it is, at its core, a beautifully dramatic love story, for me that got overshadowed by the second - present - storyline, which takes us, as well as Mungo, on a fishing trip with two men Mungo’s mother met at Alcoholics Anonymous, who are supposed to “make him a man”.
The whole book is filled with different kinds of pain, intersected by small scenes of love and happiness.
I felt, at times, as if I was reading “A Little Life”(Hanya Yanagihara), only “Young Mungo” was, for me, worse. Simply because I experienced Stuart’s descriptions of Mungo’s abuse as much more vivid.
What I absolutely love is both of the storylines coming together in the last chapter, promising a satisfactory end, only to leave us with an open ending.
Another book I saw parallels to was “The perks of being a wallflower”(Stephen Chbosky), because at some point, Mungo gives James a tape which only contains “Panic” by the Smiths, which is similar to Charlie’s love for the song “Asleep”, by the same band.
The last book I had to think of was “my year of rest and relaxation”(Ottessa Moshfegh), not for any of the contents, but because that book left me with much of the same empty feeling afterwards. With both books, I didn’t know how to feel about them after reading, and lay awake thinking about what I took from what I’d read.
I still don’t really know how I should rate this book. It’s beautiful, a treat to read, but at the same time, I was shaking with fear to go on reading when I was at about 85% of the book.

I'm choosing to believe that its a happy ending. Its 2am and I need a happy ending.

Well written, loved the Glaswegian dialogue writing. Very bleak.
