4 ⭐️ “He knew if they caught him staring they would have a hundred names for him before he had a name for himself”

This one hurts! Very devastating! I kept putting off reading it because of the pit in my stomach dreading what would happen to Mungo. I liked the back and forth in time. And glimmers of goodness in those around him. Even when everything else is horrifying and tragic. A bit of a slow start trying to get your lay of the land.

Huuuuge TW for sexual violence and general violence.

Non linear storyline following Mungo as he grapples with his identity. Hard story to summarize but I really cared about the Mungo character. I wish relationship with James got more time in the story.

DNF at 55%. I love the immersiveness of the setting and that's what kept me reading as far as I did, but I just was not at all taken by Mungo's voice. There are many points where a character just outright states the theme(s) that the novel is trying to convey, which I always find irritating and unrewarding as a reader. I also feel like I've read this book 12 million times before and therefore know exactly how it ends without needing to actually read it.
