So intense and brutal in parts. But it also feels like such an accurate portrayal of Glasgow in the 90’s based on external stories I’ve heard.

“It was a funny thing to be a disappointment because you were honest and assumed others might be too.” (p. 9).

Alcoholism, masculinity, sexual exploitation and violence seems to be a common theme in Stuart’s books. It’s clear that these books are inspired from experience and it is harrowing to read. Mungo has a unique personality that’s abstract and original, and in it’s own way relatable. The blossoming of friendship and romance was compelling, but the excitement was quickly dampened by the foreshadowing of what was to come. This book is dark, heavy, raw and utterly incredible.

Figuring out how to rate this book was a challenge, on one hand the prose is beautifully written, the accent of the narrator was perfect and the characters feel real- on the other hand it wasn’t quite everything I hoped it was. There was a lot of stones left unturned and questions left unanswered, and not in a way that felt intentional. It was heartbreaking, traumatising and chaotic but also at times unrealistic, repetitive and predictable. I am glad that I read it (and that i have visited many places mentioned) but I just wish it had given a little more! Definitely want to read more from Douglas Stuart though!
