Il giovane Mungo

This is a 3.5. I can see many good things about this book, a story full of violence, lack of opportunities, toxic masculinity and the violence and shame towards queer people and their identities. The intimacy and introspective scenes going on Mungo's mind are beautifully written. At the same time, there was something about the book that didn't allow me to connect with it as much as I would have liked to. While some chapters had a great potential to connect with the reader, being full of emotion, some of the others came across as dense and overly explained making the story long at times and making me, personally, disconnect with the story.

a non-stop tour of violence and abuse. I can’t even tell if it’s well-written because it’s so relentlessly painful and gruesome.

Loved this, another incredibly compelling novel from Douglas Stuart - so much in common with Shuggie Bain, but a distinct voice and story emerge in Young Mungo, suspensefully exploring violence, compassion, and ultimately, hope.

I should stop reading books that make me cry out out loud in pain.

Extremely well written. Might be my new favorite author!
