I loved this book so much. I can’t remember the last I read a whole book in one sitting. It’s beautiful and poignant and riveting.

this was a charming, poetically written book that spoke right to the tropes and atmospheres I adored as a child, and still do to this day. small mysteries, brave little girls, British historical setting, witchy woman, etc. I did expect more creepy woods vibes than there were, but I was pleasantly surprised by the exploration of grief, depression, bad 1920s mental healthcare, the aftermath of WWI, being an outsider, and the depth found in those portrayals. the author does great audiobook narration.

I can’t believe this is a book aimed at middle grade, it was such a lovely read and highlighted some extremely important topics about mental illness, grief and death.
The paperback is also so beautiful and I love the illustrations throughout

Another 3.5 ⭐️ read for me. I enjoyed the book and it was a quick read, but there was nothing which particularly pulled me into the story and I thought the book was problematic in places. That said, I thought the topic matter was an important one and I can see future books by this author having great potential.

It's been a while since a book actually made me cry.
This reminded me of all my favourite children's classics, like Green Knowe and the Secret Garden, but was also a little bit like a children's version of The Yellow Wallpaper. It felt, at times, like a children's book written for nostalgic, depressed adults. Obviously I loved it!

Graphic: Child death, Forced institutionalization, Grief, and Fire/Fire injury
Moderate: Mental illness, Medical content, and War

More "adult" than I anticipated, in a good way. I imagine this would be a good way to discuss themes like loss and suicide with young teens.
