the parallel universes concept was intriguing but really difficult to listen to as an audiobook. also, teen romance is not for me ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This made me think a lot. I really loves this book. I thought in the beginning maybe I was going to have to ditch it but it came through in full force at the end and really resonated with me. Adelaide is such a complex character. I also really love how the author decided to add a multiverse aspect into the book to show more development to the characters and the story.

This to me is a book about the different types of love we come across and how they manifest. I especially love how romantic love isn’t seen as the solution. Adelaide at one point even tells Mikey ‘it’s not his job to make me happy’, which I thought was very powerful. I’d love to see more of that in (YA) fiction, instead of main characters who cling on to toxic relationships.
I love Lockwood’s writing style, and all the different universes really added even more to that. I am still confused about what actually happened, though. I thought I got the idea behind some of the universes, but I couldn’t distinguish all of them properly (in one universe Jack is dating a girlfriend from a philosophy class, but that was the only clear distinguishable universe to me). The ending left me even more confused. Still, without understanding why, I found it hard to put this book down.

Honestly I loved this book. It reminded me of my own writing in a lot of ways, and I appreciated the different realties aspect. The only reason it's not a fine star is because the character Stacy annoyed me quite a bit. Also, the random buys of like poetry and prose were odd and I didn't understand them. I would read this book again 100%, but I think a lot of people wouldn't like it because of the different realities aspect. If I read it again, I think I'd pick up on a lot more of the beautiful language and details E Lockhart put into this novel.

This book was NOT what I expected, which is not to say it's a bad book. But I went into this thinking it would be book about a relationship through different timelines. What I got was a family story, trauma, addiction, and abandonment discussions alongside mental health and self-care. It was heavy. The characters weren't always likeable. They're flawed. They're trying their best. In the end, the growth of the MC was decent and the presentation of the storyline was interesting. It wasn't a favorite but it was enjoyable.
