Abandoned Prayers: The Incredible True Story of Murder, Obsession and Amish Secrets by Gregg Olsen
bratdorkable's review
I can not in good conscience give this book any kind of rating as a person who grew up around Amish I felt like the parts about the Amish were mostly accurate but poorly researched. A lot of the rest of the book is giving homophobic and gay panic…do not recommend

I wanted to like this and initially enjoyed all the information and detail about Amish life — that was by far the best part of the book. However it strayed from there and focused in heavily on the story leading up to the central murder of the book, naming tens and tens of places and names. I think it lost itself in these details, and strayed from what made the story of this criminal interesting in the first place. In particular the last few chapters dragged to a huge extent, with many witnesses repeating similar and repetitive evidence, and overall it really needed to be summarised — in general the philosophy of ‘even though the evidence WAS available, it didn’t need to be used in the book’ needed to be embraced. However it was easy to read and quick moving, so it was still readable, and the initial chapters were certainly great.

Such a sad and disturbing story. It was told extremely well, and really let a person see what Eli Stutzman was like behind the facade he often put on. An unforgettable story that will undoubtedly stick with me for a while. Can't wait to read more books by this author.
