✿ Review ⪼

Since this book is the second in the series, this review will contain spoilers and references to the first book, *Caraval*.

This time, the story is told from Donatella’s perspective, which initially made me both skeptical and a little sad. I had fallen so deeply in love with Scarlett and Julian that I didn’t expect to connect with the protagonists of this book in the same way.

But Tella turned out to be so much more than I had anticipated. She is a fascinating character, and throughout the book, I grew to love and understand her even more.

Once again, Stephanie Garber did not disappoint. Her writing style, her ability to transport readers into another world—it’s simply mesmerizing. I never once had to check the map because the world was already so vividly etched in my mind.

Dear Legend,
I may still love Julian more, but hats off to you. I knew who you were all along, yet I also know there’s so much more to discover about you. And I want to read it all!

Yours,
G

3.75 ⭐️ and rounding up.

This book definitely had a completely different vibe than Caraval but I still enjoyed it. I think it was easy to expect the same whimsical themes to transition into this book and because that wasn’t the case, I was slightly disappointed.

That’s not to say that the story isn’t still great and engaging it’s just different. I think “middle of a trilogy” books can be kind of hard to write, and I just felt like some of the puzzles/riddles/plot twists didn’t hit as hard and left a bit to be desired. It was also a lot more slow than Caraval which made me want to put the book down more often.

It’s still a really fun read, definitely darker than Caraval and I would still recommend this book!
