This book will make you laugh, cry, and contemplate life all at the same time. A beautiful story with an immersive atmosphere and loveable characters. Feels like a love letter to the small southern towns while still acknowledging the issues and dark parts of their history. I will be recommending this book to everyone that will listen.

The movie is in and of itself really amazing and well done, and the movie pointed me here. But if the movie is so good, the book is perfect. Even though I had seen the movie, there is enough newness and great narration and storytelling on Flaggs’ part that I was completely consumed by the story. The inserts by Dot Weems, the extra elaboration on the lives of the Peavey’s, just spectacular. If I could give this 6/5 stars, I would. Of course given that the book is not super recent, some people might be maddened by outdated terminology pertaining to racism or colorism, but that is the time the book is situated in. And despite some of this language, Flagg narrates honestly and does not shy away from realities, but also does not augment hardships. This is a book of real life (even if the main event is hard to believe!) and it encourages a loving perspective and an attitude of gratitude. Everyone needs this book.
