very folksy, very of the 80s white southern liberal in terms of depicting black characters. evelyn's chapters were a joy to read though.

Overall, I found this to be very enjoyable. A bit of a slow start and some redundant plot points here and there, but it was touching and felt expansive. Super folksy/Americana, which I really loved.

You’re an old bee charmer, Idgie Threadgoode, that's what you are...

i adored this! it's very much a product of its time, yes, but parts of it are executed with a lot more grace than i was anticipating for something written in the 80s. obviously this applies the most to the relationship between idgie and ruth, which is so much more explicitly outlined than you'd think, while other central characters and themes feel as though they are treated to a cursory glance in comparison. the black characters are not treated with as much care, but i would expect nothing less from a white woman. on the whole, though, i found myself inexplicably drawn in by the story, especially when it came to its structure. it is so tight in terms of pacing, switching seamlessly between past and present while being interspersed by newspaper clippings, making whistle stop and the surrounding area feel so rich and lived in. my friend samhita recommended i read this before i watch the film, and i'm so glad i did. i don't know how i'll feel about the adaptation, but i'm thrilled to be left with optimistic feelings from the original.
