I thought this was a very cute and blatantly queer story. With that being said, it was still subtle enough that it fit the time it was written so I'm not upset about it. Did cry a little at the end

Better than the movie. I named my cats after two of the main female characters: Ruth and Idgie.
more like 2.5 but whatever - it’s like fine and the stories all connect but also why do white authors love to write about the past just to be able to write the n word

34 counts of the N word in this book by the way; I cannot in good conscience give it the full five stars
Graphic: Death, Racial slurs, Racism
Moderate: Domestic abuse
Minor: Ableism, Fatphobia
The best thing I can say about this book is that as soon as I finished, I wanted to read it again. We’ve all seen the movie, but the book has so much more depth and heart in relationships. Perhaps my favorite thing, besides the richness of all nearly all the characters, is how everyone in her life just accepts Idgie for who she is. How her and Ruth’s very clearly gay relationship was just not-a-big-deal. Whistle Stop was not free from institutional racism and the effects of slavery in the south, but somehow the smallness of the town allowed people to love and take care of each other better. I was a teeny bit disappointed that one of Evelyn’s big hallmarks of health was weight loss but it was the times. One of my new favorites, which feels like an old friend. Like Ninny.

I loved the movie, and I love this story. The narrator and time period change, 1920's to the 1980s. Each chapter has a heading with date and source. It alternates between the Weems' weekly bulletin, Mrs Threadgoode telling Evelyn her stories, and Evelyn finding herself. There is a large cast of characters, but the main characters are Mrs. Ninny Threadgoode and Evelyn. There are some trigger warnings, so check those out. This story was written in the late 1980s. It is the first book in the Whistle Stop Cafe Series. The movie didn't follow the book 100 percent, but I felt it stuck to it pretty well.
