I had a REALLY hard time getting into this one and almost gave up on it. I powered through, and it did get a bit better. It would have helped me tremendously if I had kept a log of all of the characters, but I just didn't want to invest that kind of time in it. In the end, I thought it was just ok.

I first watched the movie in my early teens and absolutely loved the story line. I’m pleased that much of the main plots remained almost verbatim: I may have squealed reading “The secret’s in the sauce!” There is of course more in depth character development in to book, as many movie adaptations leave out the backgrounds of support characters… which reading how different the world was 100, heck even nearly 40 years ago, yet we still have many of the social stigmas and prejudices from back then ::sigh::
I love the talking points Fannie Flagg sends through her main characters: LGBTQ+, disabilities, ageism, feminism, toxic masculinity, racism, religion & morality, and finally mortality… it’s pretty much all covered and written before it would be labeled “woke” by today’s standards. Now to go watch the movie again!

I liked it a lot, it was nice to read about a sapphic relationship that took place in the historical south, and didn’t rely on labels as much, it was very much showing not telling. A con, though, was the gratuitous use of the n word by a white author. I know that it was supposed to take place in the south in the 20s-60s, but still is a bit iffy. Overall good, though.
