*4.5!

This book was pretty good! I really enjoyed the mystery aspects of it, and the back-and-forth between the past and present. Dual perspective stories are not always done well, but this one is! This book felt very small-towny and homey. It reminded me of a Southern version of books by William Kent Krueger (such as Ordinary Grace). It was pretty well-paced for the most part and provided a good story that kept the pages turning. The characters are unique, talkative, and well-developed with their own perspectives and ideas. I recommend this book if you have a special place in your heart for a small town. <3

DID NOT FINISH

I stopped reading this almost immediately, realizing that the issues I found with the movie would be exacerbated in the book. I cannot STAND racist portrayals of history, especially coming from a white author. I've recently been stopping myself from giving lesbian and gay fiction a pass for racism and colorism, simply due to the fact that it is queer. A fine book, but if racist content bothers you, maybe take a second thought.

loved the structure, piecing together bits of the story from news clippings and story telling and 3rd person. only the reader knows the full story of the goings on of whistle stop alabama. i loved idgie, and the themes of justice throughout the story. gotta try some of sipsey’s recipes
