Ok, it took the third book in this series to hook me in. This book was by far the best of the Charlotte Holmes series that I read. I usually donโ€™t like books that are written in 2 different perspectives (Holmes & Watson pretty much every other chapter), but for this story it just happens to work. A fun read from beginning to end.

What makes this series entirely unique is that this is not so much about the case the duo Watson and Holmes are trying to solve. This is mostly a series about three messed up families messing each other up even further. It's quite incredible to see how things can escalate just because people are stuck with a certain last name, a reputation and a history. However, that's of course also what makes this series so much fun to read. Something cool is waiting around every corner.

The previous book already turned the entire situation into quite a mess, with Jamie Watson as collateral damage. In this book we discover what happened right after the incident with August and in the year that followed. Most of it is told in flashbacks. The flashbacks are kinda messy at times, but that fits the characters and the way this story is told. Like I already said, they are kinda messy, the situation is kinda messy, a kinda messy storytelling structure only enhances that feeling.

Even more than the previous cases, it's very clear from the start that everything that happens to Jamie and Charlotte is a family matter. After the stunt Charlotte and her brother pulled the Moriarty's want revenge. In a way the plot and story has a maffia kind of vibe. All those families are involved, they had a feud going on and no method is too bad to use. And near the end it very clearly escalates completely, which leads to an exciting and really interesting finale.

And just like in the previous books the characters so very clearly wear the scars of everything that happened to them. Jamie might have some form of PTSD, Charlotte already had quite some issues she would have to deal with at some point. Since this book is told from both their point of views we get to see how broken they are, how everything that happened effected them, how they are both damaged in their own way, how they know that they will make things worse if they are together like this, how they still miss each other when they're not together. It's heartbreaking and no matter how messy and extreme the story feels at some points, it also feels kinda realistic.

The ending suggests that Charlotte and Jamie might be able to have a happy ending together. I can't wait to see if and how that will work out. They both have a lot of personal growth and issue solving to do first, that's for sure.

I really feel like this series is dragging.. I loved the first book, and I know for a fact that I need to reread the second book but this one.. I don't know. It could have just been that fact that it's freezing and it gives me less motivation to read, or because work has greatly made my energy go down after 7 pm. I still do enjoy this series, even if I gave it the rating I did. I love the characters and I am greatly appalled and disappointed that Netflix did the movie Enola Holmes instead of adapting this series. The book trailers for these on Epic Reads YouTube are amazing. The first one perfectly captures the two characters.

Jamie and Charlotte are such amazingly fleshed out characters that the rest is starting to not matter as much to me?
