I was really disappointed in this book. It had good atmosphere but the romance was too insta lovey and I really didn’t understand why the MC was interested in the love interest in the first place. I like two of the side characters (Saba and Jember). The only reason I didn’t dnf this was because I wanted to see what happened with Jember. I wish more had been explained and that the plot was more focused on. This was not for me.

I’m not into books where the main character hitting her love interest is portrayed as a cute and romantic thing to do. Abuse is abuse even if it’s a woman hitting a man. It doesn’t even happen once, it happens several times, or she’ll threaten to hit him if he’s acting in a way she doesn’t like. Disgusting.

When I heard "gothic fantasy Jane Eyre" my ears were peaked. The reimagining elements in this are stellar; however, it does fall into to some typical story plot ARC issues when doing a retelling. Either way, I'm looking forward to whatever Lauren Blackwood comes up with next.

I received an ecopy of this book via Netgalley; however, my opinions are my own.

“It’s said the Evil Eye was the first Manifestation of sin—namely jealousy and greed. In a constant state of longing, it latches on to any human who desires the same thing it does.”

Woah.

This book was a random pick up at an overstock store, so I wasn't expecting much, but if it hadn't been for having to go to work, I would have finished it in one sitting.
