i really wanted to like this because the title is intriguing, the story seems incredible, and i like the cover. but alas, i did not enjoy it. the story is interesting and important, but i did not like the writing style or the narrator’s voice. it just makes me angry bc it had SO MUCH POTENTIAL!!!

This is some of the hottest garbage I’ve ever read lol, 90% of this book is just about how small and skinny and rich the author/narrator is and how even skinnier and more rich her friends are and why do boys not like me? because I’m so small and delicate uwu,,,,,,,,,,deadass if I had picked this up while at home I’d have giving up on reading probably 50 pages in. This was pitched to me as sort of a true crime book? but its just the vanity project of someone stuck in her teenage years for some reason and it just proves to me that I don’t care about the memoirs of rich privileged white people lol.

Parts of this book I didnt love, but there were a few reflections in it that were so relatable and beautifully written that it moved it up to 3 stars. Other times it felt muddled, and even some of the passages I loved (like one about the ex boyfriend towards the end of the book) didnt cleanly fit into the narrative for me. I likely wouldnt recommend this to many people, but I also didnt dislike reading it.

So, yeah, the author's upfront about the fact that this is a mix of memoir and true crime.
The problem is that it's more "aimless memoir" than it is true crime. Even what little remains of the true crime aspect of the book is horrendously boring and disconnected.
The opening of the book leads you to believe that the two will tie-in significantly- they don't. I made it about halfway through the book before I gave up. Things just jump all over the place throughout the book, from one meaningless topic to another. There's no direction to this book and without something to compensate for an anticipated payoff- something interesting to read in the meantime, even if it's confusing- it's just painful to keep sloughing through it.
