The back of the book is misleading. It lets you think that whats written is the main plot of the book. While it does have an importance, it is not at the forefront during the novel.
I would have liked to see more of an investigation, like Firekeeper’s daughter.
Warrior Girl Unearthed is still a good book though that I recommend

I adore Boulley and her writing and will admit that at this point, I'm probably biased in my ratings. I will happily look past some of the shortcomings of this book in order to rave about it. The ending was rushed and the characters felt a lot younger than those in Firekeeper's Daughter , but an actual age gap, combined with a more modern time period in this book makes that seem reasonable.

I also have to admit that issues and conversations surrounding the repatriation of Indigenous cultural artifacts and remains from museum to collections to the communities where they belong has been something that's interested me for a while. With a background in museum studies and anthropology, it's been at the forefront of a lot of my education and to see a whole book about it was fascinating. I once again absolutely loved the characters and loved the return of some favourites from Firekeeper's Daughter . Perry and her gang of misfit toys were wonderful and I just wish this book had gone on forever.

I liked this even more than Firekeeper’s Daughter, but it helped that I’d read that book before. The character of Perry is lovable. She’s young, impetuous, and cares deeply for what’s right.

I generally don't enjoy most YA anymore, but this one is an exception. Warrior Girl Unearthed is exceptionally told and a compelling read. I hadn't ever thought about how it must feel for people who have cultural items and human remains in museums, so this was eye-opening and thought-provoking. I really enjoyed the overall plot of the story, even though the heist-y bits don't come in until over halfway through. The only thing I didn't enjoy about this book is the lack of translation for the Ojibewemowin that Boulley includes in the book, especially since you can't find the translations for some of the longer interactions on Google so the meaning is just kind of inferred based on context. However, I also realize that not including translations is her prerogative and not something owed to the reader, so while I did find it a little frustrating, I understand why she did it. Overall, highly recommend.
