The reveal in this book was awesome, one of the few mysteries I've read recently to really deliver a jaw-dropping reveal feeling without sacrificing the logic of the mystery. I really felt like I could have figured it out the whole time if I had just put a few pieces together a little differently (and i was trying- i have pages of notes!). A really fun and entertaining mystery book that did not let me down, and characters that were still fun to read about even knowing that anyone could either die or be the killer. Plus, felt truly fair-play!
Not quite sure how to rate this because I really enjoyed my reading experience & not even joking I started tearing up at one point because of how scary it was like full on tears streaming down my face (Not that this is that scary but these kinds of isolated island with killer still amongst us GET ME SO BAD).
Speaking of isolated islands with killers still amongst us, yes, this is quite like Agatha Christie’s And then there were none (which I absolutely ADORE) & I think it’s even referenced in the text once, although I did find it strange that the characters didn’t compare their situation more since they’re all crime enthusiasts & one of them is even nicknamed after Christie.
We all know it could never beat the classic but the main thing that annoyed me is that it’s structured with 2 simultaneous story lines (on & off the island) which could have worked if it provided the audience with a way to learn more than the characters on the island but most of the time the two groups of characters just had to learn/deduce the same things, often in close proximity, which draggedddd.
Furthermore the gender dynamics are a bit questionable, obviously this came out a long time ago so it’s very of it’s time but there are barely any female characters & no good ones - they’re all caricatures or plot devices. I was honestly surprised they killed Agatha off so early because who will make the tea?
