This is book 4 in the Rainbow Place. We previously met the characters in books 2 and 3, but Simon's interest in Lady Gogo was obvious in book 3 and I was overjoyed when Jay said he would be writing their story next.

This is an excellent exploration of sexuality and gender. Jay expresses the confusion that surrounds these realisations and the subsequent upheaval and that these revelations can cause. And he handles it all with the sensitivity the situation requires while still keeping the reader entertained.

As with the rest of the series we get glimpses of the previous couples, especially Cam and Alex.

If you've not visited Rainbow Place before suggest that you start with book 1, because, why not? However this book can be read as a standalone if you must.

Well written, these books have a great sense of place and an excellent British feel.

I hate to chose but I think this might be my favourite.

All I can say in closing is 'Please, Jay, can I have some more?' Quentin's story, maybe.

I've enjoyed all four of this series so far, but as with books 2 and 3 I felt that this was almost the first 3/4 of a story, with an epilogue not set far enough in the future for a HEA. It's very much a HFN. However, I loved how inclusive this book was and how empathetically it dealt with both Charlie and Simon, and how they navigated their relationship, their own perceptions of themselves, and how society sees them.

This is a wonderful book feature two characters you will love from the start. Charlie takes part in a talent contest as Lady Gogo and revels in exploring the side of himself he's kept hidden until now. Simon has always though of himself as straight, but when he sees Charlie perform, he's mesmerized. But when the two start a relationship and work through their images and become accepting of their sexuality, it's difficult at times, but as they learn and grow together, you can see how perfect they are for one another. I was blown away by this story and I absolutely loved it. Highly Recommended!!

This was a way better story than the 3 one in this series. I really liked Charlie and the way he was figuring out his identity. I
Thought that Simon was acting a little bit like an idiot in the begining but he got better throughout the story. Would definatly recommend it

Words can’t express how much I loved this book! Totally amazing, healing and a great understanding of gender identity and fluidity.

I’ve loved the Rainbow Place series and this would have to be the best of the lot! I loved Wicksy and Charlie! They are perfect together and their chemistry and connection is a joy to uncurl.

I resonated so much with Charlie and what he is going through. He is exploring and coming to terms with his gender identity and what that means for himself, his family and friends and what it could mean with his growing connection with Simon (aka Wicksy).

Simon is attracted to Charlies drag persona, Lady Gogo from the start and what was supposed to be an exploration of a sexual fantasy turns into a new understanding of his sexuality and identity. Jay handles both these situations with such care and heart you can feel the whole process of exploration and discovery. This is a fantastic book about attraction, gender, and ingrained roles. Surprising and heartfelt I enjoyed every moment. Highly recommended!!!

I went into Mud & Lace without knowing anything about it, just wanting to binge the series, and I was not prepared for the way it made me feel.

Content warnings include: sex on-page, gender and sexual identity questioning, feminization, characters frequently drink alcohol, dismissive comments about feminine gay men, sports injury.

Like some of the previous books in the series, Mud & Lace has a base setting that, on-paper, sounds like it can very easily turn south. In this case it's a straight guy starting to sleep with a drag queen, who's a gay man under the make-up. Yet Jay Northcote manages to set the context and situation so perfectly it works out wonderfully.

The questioning sexuality plotline was very well done, but the gender questioning part of the plot left a much bigger impression on me. I am non-binary and have done and am still doing quite a bit of gender questioning myself - and Mud & Lace was spot on for that. I have to admit I cried a little, but it was good tears!

I liked both Simon and Charlie as characters, and I loved the background setting for them questioning their identities. It really was that that made the book for me, though the rest of the plot makes for a quite nice romance on its own too.

Charlie's character makes this book

I was worried I wouldn't like this story but it was good. Charlie's character is so sweet and you instantly love him . The boy who works in Superdrug in the day to Lady Gogo in the evening! For a 'straight' guy, Simon didn't hold back on the action whoch kept the book interesting.

This book reminded me of Helping Hand, the same magic with an extra layer of maturity and self-discovery. I read this in one go, it was just impossible to put away. Absolutely amazing story! As of now, this is my favorite Jay Northcote title. Hands down.

I’ve been waiting for this story, super intrigued by Wicksy and Lady Gogo from their first meeting in Better Place. I had high expectations, but this still blew me away. This was such a fun read, with just the right amount of nervous tension, excellent pacing and phenomenal secondary characters. Loved the mums!

One of the (many) great things about this book is that both MC’s learned new things about themselves and that it wasn’t purely a “classic” OFY story. Charlie is an amazing character and I really enjoyed seeing him come into his own. I thought it was really great to have an MC who identifies as gender fluid.

Wicksy’s confusion felt very authentic to me. He’s not perfect and doesn’t have his act together from the get go, but he’s just so genuine and such a nice guy all around. Also, it really has to be said… this is a super sexy story! Wicksy sure has a way with words. I was seriously worried my kindle would catch fire.

Wicksy/Simon and Charlie are wonderful together and I hope to see more of them in future Rainbow Place stories.
