I love you, Kaylee. More than I've ever loved anyone. More than I will ever love anyone. If I could freeze this moment in time and never have to let you go, I would do it without a second thought. -- Todd

*** Please be aware that there may be some small, tiny spoilers in this review ***

This is a moment where I literally don't have the accurate words to explain the emotions and feelings moving around in my head. As all of us already know, this series does nothing but surprise, shock, and amaze us. So why should any of us feel surprised at exactly how we would be feeling after this book?

There are 3 important aspects of this book that I really need to get into.

Characters

Unfortunately, hoping this doesn't disappoint a lot of you, but we literally get to be introduced to every single character that we have had the opportunity to meet since the beginning of the series. To say that is a welcome heartfelt reunion, is totally up to you to determine. I loved how everyone was mixed up into this crazy amazing train-wreak. Okay , maybe not all of it was a train wreck. *cough*Todd&Kaylee*cough*

Wow, what more can I say with these two? We all knew that at the end of IID, Todd and Kaylee had their bitter-sweet moment and we learned their real feelings and how their relationship came into effect. What I loved about this book compared to all the others? It was so much more... affectionate. Way more "touchy-feely" was more....adult? But not really. The chemistry that Nash and Kaylee had at the beginning was amazing. You could tell how much they liked each other and you knew how attracted they were to each other. But honestly? It doesn't even come close to the chemistry Todd and Kaylee have. We got so many steamy private moments between the two that Nash and Kaylee barley got.
SpoilerPlus they finally get the REAL thing *wink wink* ;)

Nash. How could he not feel the way that he does? Honestly, he's been through hell and back and it never got any better for him. Unfortunately, he still thinks that somewhere deep down Kaylee will return to him. It's sad, really sad. The worst part? I almost wish they would. I have never lost the love I had for Nash since the beginning. Technically Nash is the reason Kaylee was even able to handle everything she learned about herself. Yes he fell off the deep end, yes he screwed up horribly but guess what? Who hasn't? I think that makes him the most real person out of all of them. I know Todd and Kaylee are so much better for each other, but I will never lose the hope that somewhere, locked away, Nash and Kaylee will still have something there.

In the midst of all that comes Sabine. Oh "Bina" for once I feel sorry for her. She has done nothing but be there for Nash 100% and shes done a damn good job at that. She is still a bitchy, snotty, rude, bold, and straight up honest person since we first met her. The kind of (and I mean KIND of) good part about her this time around? Her and Kaylee are finally starting to become "friends." Okay maybe that's not the best word, but it's getting to be pretty damn close.

We get to meet the new character Luca, who we all first got introduced too in the Novella of [b:Never to Sleep|12866441|Never to Sleep (Soul Screamers, #5.5)|Rachel Vincent|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1322147449s/12866441.jpg|18018609]. Yeah I will admit he's pretty great. We learn that he is a necromancer. He can sense the dead. Not "see" the dead, but feel their presence. I wouldn't say I disliked him, but he didn't really grow on me as much as I wanted him too.

Story-line

Since almost the first couple of pages things already swirled into disaster. I didn't feel like I could stop and take a breath for the life of me. Between Kaylee trying to act like she never died, attend school, and try and ignore all the gossip of "the girl who survived a stabbing from their math teacher", she has to deal with her new job that gave her the chance to even pretend to be living again. With that it felt so good to see her try and mend the relationships that slipped away, and make the ones she still had grow bigger. Kaylee's dad grew a huge soft spot inside of me and I love where he and Kaylee stand. Who wouldn't want a dad like him? Nash and Kaylee finally mend some of the broken heartedness and slowly, slowly grow back some of their friendship. With new twists and new surprises nothing was expected. I had my gasp-out-loud moments, my omg-did-that-just-happen blurbs and yes I even had a few teary eyed moments.

The ending

Really? Honestly? That just happened? Why? How? Who? When? Where? Okay, so maybe I didn't ask all those questions but I did have a brain melt down. I felt like everything was led up to this big huge recovery and BAM an invisible arm grabbed me and threw me to the floor and told me to sit and wait. Yeah, I guess that just about summarizes it. So what am I suppose to do?

Why sit and wait forever of course!! Until we can see exactly how this world and lives are ending. By ending, I mean happily ever after right? RIGHT?! *Sigh*

Anyway, I just finished Before I Wake this afternoon. I love the Soul Screamer Series so so so much. And Tod...major swoon. I'm still not sure if anything can beat out the 5th book, If I Die. I mean what can top a starstruck lover giving up his afterlife for the girl he loved, then she turns around and bargains with the powers that be to bring Tod back as a Reaper and free Nash of all false murder charges. Kaylee is quite the bargainer...I want her on my side in the end.

The sixth installment had me giggling at Kaylee's and Tod's witty banter, Sabine's complete insanity, and Sophie's uncomfortable acceptance of her, now, not-crazy cousin. After all, Luca and Sofie visited the Netherworld in a little novella, Never to Sleep. But...tears also made an appearance while watching Kaylee struggle to "live," her dad learn to let go, and seeing Nash hurt. Regardless of the scenario, everyone in this little group has made their mistakes, from drug addiction to actually trying to auction off someone to the evil Avari so she can get to the boy she loves. What I admired most about this book, is Kaylee's refusal to leave a single one of her friends without protection, no matter how messed up they were.

Kaylee is everything I wish I could be and, at the same time, everything I am. She's loyal, strong, and take charge. She's also scared, a tad bit depressed, and completely lost at times. I mean, I think about the next ten years and freak out, can you imagine looking forward to eternity? No thank you. She has also found her true love, someone that can remain by her side for all of eternity - assuming neither of them break any rules that will end their afterlives or get re-killed by Avari and his band of hellions.

Rachel is one of few authors who make you care about the side characters just as much as you care about Kaylee, Tod, and Nash. While there are times I would like to strangle Sabine, Before I Wake gives you some insight into her lover for Nash and her fears. Who knew the mara had fears, she's a living, breathing nightmare after all. She's waiting for Nash to get over Kaylee, which absolutely cannot be easy. Nash is struggling through his love and hatred for Kaylee - slowly and awkwardly. His dependence on mind-altering substances poses some major issues.

Emma's finally found a boyfriend, a human boyfriend. I love the way Emma's character is written because she's not the "weak little human" among her group of friends. She's strong in her own ways and a totally kick ass friend to Kaylee. She never runs screaming when Kaylee tells her about Avari's newest endeavor - the ability to physically cross over from the Netherworld to the human plane. Stealing souls from everyday normal humans and Reapers and Extractors.

Avari's plan culminates at the end of the book, leaving us with another cliffhanger. I can't imagine waiting on the final story.

Many things are resolved in Before I Wake but others remain unknown and uncharted. My heart quickened with excitement, slowed with Kaylee's desperation, and stilled in terror. If you haven't started this series, I recommend you do so soon. And...never fear, the times Kaylee's story seems slow or uncomfortable all rebound, leaving readers wondering WTH?!

The cover:
I love the UK covers of this series. They’re my favorite covers of all time. But this one I didn’t like much when compared with the US one. Maybe because the US cover has a new font style, the model looks a lot like Kaylee and it has pink not to mention that sentence “Twilight fans will love it” is not on it, this series is nothing like Twilight (Thank God!).
The storyline:
What can I say? This book blew me away!!! Literally! I don’t know what I was expecting or what I was not expecting, but it had definitely exceeded my expectations.
The turn of events and the way this book had a new storyline yet it was also a continuation of the previous one, I just didn’t know what to expect.
First, as always, here’s a summary of what happens in this book, it’ll be probably short because I don’t want to spoil anything, but as a warning, you should not be reading this review unless you’ve read If I Die, otherwise it’ll feel like I’m throwing random information and surprises at you.
Summary:
The story continues a month after Kaylee’s death, with her trying to understand what happened and act normal by going to school and “pretend” to be normal. Yet, her life has never been more abnormal than the first week of her school. Now that she’s dead, training for her new job as an extractor, trying to build a new friendship with Nash, Sabine and Sophie, and being with Tod, they don’t seem to save her from the Netherworld nor to stop Avari from playing one more game.
After thinking they got rid of him, he’s back now stronger and deadlier than ever to strike one last time and do whatever it take to get what he wants, Kaylee’s soul. This new event changes everything. It uncovers more secrets, strengthens the relationships and causes more death and destruction then ever before.
Now Kaylee must make decisions, ones that her friends and families’ lives depend on them, and put her own afterlife at stake.
What I loved:
- The storyline itself was unique (again) and had so many twists and surprises. I couldn’t keep up!
- The writing is wonderful, as usual and it was fast paced in a very good way. I didn’t feel like anything was rushed or out of its place. It was clear, simple and direct to the point.
- The characters, and all of them (except Avari for the first time) are wonderful. The new friendships between them were very good to see and know it existed. How they became close and protective of each other. And especially the new Kaylee, in If I Die I didn’t like her a lot. She kept acting as if in denial. In this book however, she matured a lot because of her death and because Tod is mature too. She fights better, thinks better, rationalize better and tries her best.
Also, we get to meet the old characters too. It was very refreshing and scary at the same time, because I could since the end coming.
- The twists, the action, the romance, the death, the gore all were present in Before I Wake. It was just awesome.
- The ending. What in the world just happened?! *_*
What I disliked:
Absolutely nothing! Well, after a second thought, maybe I dislike not having an excerpt from With All My Soul!!

The characters:
Kaylee: Our main character and new undead half bean sidhe and half extractor. From the beginning of the book until the few last chapters, it’s very clear that Kay is not familiar with her undead status and that she’s always lost, lonely and feeling numb and empty. However, when Avari shows up we get to see the strength she really has. She smarter, faster, stronger and more loyal to her loved ones determined on protecting them than ever. In this sequel, we get to see the kick-ass side of Kaylee, and it’s very good :).
Tod: Okay, seriously, who doesn’t or wouldn’t like Tod? He’s awesome! Each and every single funny moment in this book existed thanks to him. He’s always there for Kaylee and both his mother and Nash and always shows support, directly or not. He’s the voice in mind in this book since Kaylee is lost, she keeps wandering back to him to help her since he’s been thru all of it. He’s never been more emotional, serious and funny than this time. I was so glad to see him have a bigger role in this book, and not just because he’s Kaylee’s boyfriend now, but also because he’s Nash’s brother and a very important reaper who is dedicated to his job.
Nash: I really didn’t know what to expect from him in this sequel. I knew he was devastated, sad, betrayed and heartbroken and didn’t know whether he’d forgive either Tod or Kay. But he did! Somehow at least… He’s been struggling a lot since My Soul to Steal and trying to understand and deal with what has been going on. But things caught up to him and he made some very important decisions. No need to say that he’d do anything to protect everyone he cares about with every power he has left.
I’ve been sad though to notice that his role is no longer as big as before, although from the first book it was obvious that he’d never have the biggest spot, but I think he fits perfectly for this small role as a friend and brother they all need.
Sabine: She’s definitely my new favorite character in this series. I was hoping she could become a bit more friendly and less deadly than before, and I guess you don’t get to expect that much from a mara! But well, she kept trying her best to keep her temper under control and be nice ( as nice as a nightmare can be) to others. But her strength, anger and fright are all in a good use when you’re facing hellions.
Emma: Another character I was pleased to see more of in this book. It was really nice to know that Kaylee had someone like Emma who is her best friend and now knows everything about Kaylee and her supernatural life. Despite her fragile and cute looks, she’s very strong and has strong beliefs in her friends, especially Kaylee, and would never doubt them.
Thane: Oh well, I had no idea he’d be back. I know I’m usually in favor of the bad guys, but Thane I hate. I just hate him for many reasons which I could count but then would spoil this review (more than it is already spoiled). But I can say that he has he’s own twisted malicious ways of helping himself and with no intentions of doing so, helping others. He’s just like an add-on.
Avari: I don’t think I need to say anything about him, actually. He is my favorite hellion of all time. He’s manipulative, smart, thinks fast, acts quickly and especially deceptive and likes to play games. This summarizes him very well, I guess. However, we get to know the reasons behind his obsession with Kaylee’s soul and how far he will go to achieve his goals.
Luca: The new addition to the group of extreme supernatural teenagers. A necromancer who turns out to be Kaylee’s partner in her job as an extractor. And Sophie’s boyfriend. He’s very nice, cute and friendly and he would die for Sophie.
Other characters worth mentioning are: Sophie, Kaylee’s cousin and now ally. We get to see another side of her as well. Invidia, the hellion of jealousy. Belphegore, the hellion of vanity and the one who killed Sophie’s mother and other four girls back in My Soul to Take. Madeline, Kaylee’s boss at the reclamation department. She’s very serious and hard to negotiate with and yet she’s understanding and can tolerate some rules. Kaylee’s father, who’s trying to get over the fact that he’s daughter is undead and that she hangs around with Tod. At night. Alone. Harmony, Nash’s and Tod’s mother whom I totally missed and yet didn’t get to see a lot of her in this book. And finally, Sophie’s father, Mr. Brendon, who wasn’t present either.

Favorite quotes:
I WAS A virgin sacrifice. And yeah, it’s just as creepy as it sounds. I died on a Thursday, at twenty-seven minutes after midnight, killed by a monster intent on stealing my soul. The good news? He didn’t get it. The bad news? Turns out not even death will get you out of high school… . --- Chapter 1.

Scott and I had never been close, but I wouldn’t wish what he’d suffered on my worst enemy. Except maybe Avari. And Mr. Beck.

Okay, there were a couple of enemies I’d wish insanity, possession, and brain damage on, but Scott wasn’t one of them and I was glad his suffering had ended, even if it ended in death. --- Chapter 8.

“Why?” Snot dripped from Sophie’s nose and she wiped it with the back of one hand. “He tried to lock me up in the Netherworld and now he’s killing everyone I know. Why is this happening to me?” Sabine rolled her eyes. “Because you’re the beautiful fairy princess and the evil Lord of Hell can’t secure his kingdom until he’s feasted from your flesh and slaked his thirst with tea brewed from the ashes of your incinerated bones.”

Nash groaned, and Tod laughed out loud.

Sophie hiccupped and turned to me, frowning. “Is she serious?” –--- Chapter 14.

I could keep posting all of my favorite quotes but then I’ll have to post the whole book to be done with it :D.

Conclusion:
I’m happy to say this is by far the most exquisite book I’ve read this year.
It just blew me away.
I’m sad that this series is coming to an end and at the same time I’m very excited for With All My Soul <3.
Note: Don’t read Before I Wake before reading both If I Die and it’s prequel Never to Sleep. Because there are references to both and especially If I Die.

Eh

I don't know why i cant get into these books. Story is good but i was bored mostly. Im not much for drama so the Nash and Kaylee not a couple just got on my nerves. And I know a lot is going on for her but my goodness she whined a lot. I don't think I like Kaylee's character very much to begin with. Overall not too bad.

You know in my last review of the previous book, If I Die, I said that it was the best boo by far...well Before I Wake completely blows it out the picture, it's so far away it's just a speck in the distance.  Before I Wake is made of awesome, it really is.  I jumped at the chance to review this book and although I can sometimes be wary about reviewing the next in a series in case it lets me down, I have never once had that problem with anything by Rachel Vincent.  With each book she has wrote for the Soul Screamers series it get's better and better and I eagerly await the next instalment.
Spoiler
One thing that I was looking forward to reading the most was Kaylee's extra abilities.  The cliffhanger in the previous book made this key point one of the things I really wanted to see expanded on...well after her relationship with Tod, but more about that later ;).  I love how Kaylee is trying to live a somewhat normal 'human' life and going to school but still has to disappear for jobs.  I am glad that the truth about what she is has finally been told to her cousin, and now that both her and Emma know a bit more about what is really going on it makes it a little bit easier for Kaylee to include them on things, like covering for jobs.
Her relationship with Tod is still going strong and I absolutely love how he supports and is there for her in so many ways.  Their emotional and physical connection is always present whether they are together or not. He is there for her in so many ways and knows what is best for her.  I think his birthday present to her has to be the best thing ever, and even though it wasn't expensive, just a piece of paper it has to be one of the most thoughtful things he has done.  I am so glad this pair decided to get their act together they were made for each other.

Things with Nash and Sabine are not so good, which is understandable after what transpired in If I Die, but part way through Before I Wake things become less tense as they are all fighting a common enemy, and it was nice to see them somewhat relaxed towards each other.

Before I Wake sees us get reacquainted with a few familiar characters from previous books, and some of them I was shocked to actually make an appearance and sad when they ha to go (quite vague but will make sense when you read the book).  One person that we all know and love hate is Thane, and he is back and still up to no good causing havoc wherever he goes and it's up to Kaylee and the gang to try to stop him.

If you get a chance to read this amazing instalment then be prepared and carry tissues, and don't read in a public place.  There are two parts in Before I Wake that I sobbed my heart out.  The first one was...............I cried, I was shocked, I felt sorry for.....and wanted to give them hugs, but the aftermath and the way it was dealt I didn't like, even though it had to be done that way to protect ....... The second part I cried even more.  I couldn't believe it happened and I didn't see it coming, I thought it was all ok, and although things were done to save....... it didn't go back to the way things were, and again this is something I am really really looking forward to finding out how it plays out in With All My Soul, which is forever away.

Once again Rachel has blew me away with her writing, the wait for the next book is going to be torture and I may have to re-read the whole series again and try to tackle the Shifters Series just to keep me occupied.

I really still cannot tell you why I'm continuing this series. Six books in and I can't tell you. I don't like the characters. The writing is overly dramatic and trite. The plot is confusing and not all that interesting in the spots it's not confusing.

Why am I here? Why are any of us here?

My favorite character, the only one I liked at all, has become unbearable due to his proximity to Kaylee. If I read one more Romeo declaration of doomed love I was going to puke.

But guess what I'll do in a few months?

Read the next one.
