This is my first historical fiction book and honestly, I loved it! The had a really nice start and is a good way to draw in the reader and honestly it was very intriguing. This is my first time learning about the Vikings and although it was still fiction i feel like i learnt a good amount about the Aska, Riki and Herja as well as their Gods. At first I hated Eelyn's brother Iri but you grow to love him. A small things that bugged me just a little but not enough deduce a star was the amount Eelyn cried. Dont get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with crying but every chapter she was crying about something but it is fine. I really love how you got to see the development in Eelyn as a character in first person and was in my opinion well done. I also loved the friendship of Myra and Eelyn because they may fight but all throughout the fighting they still had each others backs. Was it just me or was it around the start of the book i started to ship Eelyn and Halvard because the way Halvard acts around Eelyn is so cute and the way he hugs her was honestly the best. But when i saw Fiske and Eelyn's friendship develop into more i was all for it. Overall, I loved this book and would highly recommend if it is your first historical fiction book.

Very slow start, but a solid ending. Gore in graphic war related scenes.

“‘I didn’t want to ask you,’ I said in a cracked whisper. He set his head onto my shoulder. ‘You didn’t have to ask me.’ I smiled, my lips pressed to his ear. Because Fiske lived in lockstep with his heart. He did what he believed in” (p.315).
