As much as I enjoy Sanderson's novellas, you would think that I would get around to reading his novels. But nooooo, that would make sense.
This is a great novella about what to do with the rest of your life when you're an Emperor-God, functionally immortal, and not even middle-aged. I don't want to say anything else because I don't want to give anything away, but this builds inexorably to a conclusion that I didn't see coming but that was perfectly executed. Take an hour or so and enjoy this one.

I like that Sanderson experiments and takes chances in his novellas. I don't think this one completely worked.
Fun short story. Basically takes the premise of the Matrix and mixes it with a kind of MMORPG concept of players interacting with NPCs.
Is written with all the typical Sanderson fanfare of a well thought out world, magic system, and interesting characters.
I would honestly want to see this written out in novel length, or at least another novella, like Legion.

I read this as part of the #BooktubeSFF Awards Shortlist and it was one of the few Sanderson shorts that I'd not yet got to. I have to say that as this is not a Cosmere story I wasn't sure what we'd be getting but I'd class this much more as sci fi than fantasy (which isn't a bad thing).
This story follows a character as he rules over his world as Emperor. It's set in a time when Earth is overcrowded and so many people are kept in alternate 'states' Where they live among simulations and can rule over their 'subjects' as they see fit.
It's a quirky story with some funny moments and cool twists. I definitely liked the ideas Sanderson came up with, but I think it felt a little predictable at times too.
Overall a likeable read for sure, but not my favourite Sanderson short. 3*s

I remember starting this novella many years ago but apparently I never finished. Not one of my favorite Sanderson books, but still an interesting concept. He left it open for more, and I would like to see more in this world to better understand it.
Sanderson can't help but create these worlds and systems of power. They flood him and he blessedly has the ability to share them with us..I really enjoyed this beige l brief visit in Perfect State. It's a reality that raises questions, teases at morality. The choice to show it in a vignette kept it feeling fresh and protected it from a possible exhaustion. It's worth a few bucks and a couple hours.

I really enjoyed the setting of this novella and wish there was more! Kai was a bit insufferable but it made sense in the story. I really want to read more about this universe so I hope Branderson writes more about it!
