Audible Escape: Short stories are always hard because they usually leave you wanting more. To me the difference is in whether it’s because you’re invested and want to connect with the characters or if it’s so bereft that you feel there isn’t a story.

In “Be Not Afraid”, Elijah and Kate are a couple I would definitely read/listen more about.

I have mixed feelings about Karen Chilton’s narration. She has this smooth, pleasant, perfectly wonderful voice. However it’s more like someone reading me a story rather than narrating it. She doesn’t do a good job of giving individuals their own voice. Often I wouldn’t realize that the dialogue had switched between people because they sounded exactly the same. Accents weren’t consistent.

4 for the story and 3 for narration.

This had such rich, deep, beautifully developed characters that you don't often find in novellas. I really found joy in the hope these characters were able to find in their love for each other. Such a great novella.

Quick, enjoyable listen, especially if you're into historical fiction. Just wish it was longer!

Compelling read

From the get go this story had me compelled and anxious to see how it would all turn out. Although short it packs quite a punch and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Early Alyssa Cole, rough around the edges, but I hadn't heard this narrative before

Enjoyable and super quick read. I would have enjoyed a full length novel exploring this particular aspect of the Revolutionary War.

If they had a nickel for every time they met with a dead body between them...it would be a concerning number of nickels

This is a pretty intense level of trauma for a novella of this length, and while I loved the history, the romance fell pretty flat for me. I've definitely read some much better work from Alyssa Cole

Short but oh so sweet, I love a noble hero like Elijah and the relationship with Kate was cleverly drawn over a short space of time, not easy to achieve with a novella. I was also clueless about the role African Americans played in the American Revolution, so it was fascinating to learn this piece of history, along with the significance of the title.
