What a delightful little story! I thoroughtly enjoyed it and can highly recommend it.
It's such a cute little story with lovely illustrations and nice characters. It was just an all around good time reading it. If I had a kid, I'd buy it for their library.

Shaina's town is having hard times until Izzy Pippik loses a hen while passing through. Shaina knows the hen does not belong to her or the town and is determined to keep Yevka, the hen, safe until Izzy returns. As time passes, Yevka has chicks, who have more chicks, and so on, until the town is overrun with chickens. With wonderful illustrations and a message of doing the right thing when everyone thinks you should do otherwise, this book would be a great springboard for conversations about choices.

A gentle story about doing the right thing even when it's unpopular. It went on a bit long, and I think there was a little moral ambiguity about the ultimate ownership of the chickens, since presumably the town was feeding, watering, and protecting the birds, but that's just a quibble.

The illustrations in this are adorable! The story is a bit weird though. Maybe because it's based on a cultural story/proverb with which I'm not familiar.

I love the illustrations. I found myself, unexplainably, hating the story. Not even exactly sure why, I guess it just rubbed me the wrong way? I dunno. Something about how the kid is just so damned sure she's right that she won't even listen to the guy who owns the hen when he gives it to her.

But the drawings are great.
