This was a fun read. Only giving 3 stars because I knew who the mystery person was right away, and I never figure it out right away.

I used to be a lover of thrillers and suspense – mainly mass-legal and crime thrillers many many years ago. I gave up on those because those suspenseful thrillers no longer interested me – until now!

This book, The Plot, has changed everything in my reading life for the better. It sucked me in from the beginning to the very last page. The story centers around a failing writer who stumbles on a great story plot of another would be author. He eventually steals the plot once he learns that the other would be author dies without writing his book. The rest of the story is a sit on the edge of your seat nailbiter to the very last page. I am in love with suspense again because of this extraordinary work of fiction. This book is for anyone who has been yearning for a true, authentic and original thriller. This book will not disappoint.

I guess the title lived up to the name in a literal sense, but in chasing and developing its namesake, "The Plot" leaves a lot to be desired. The characters seemed all too plastic, shaped into a particular fashion by a cookie-cutter stamp, especially when it comes to the auxiliary pieces who only seem to be there to advance the plot and leave no impression otherwise, not unlike the witnesses on any procedural crime drama on cable, making me physically recoil to the fanciful sequences that occur during the meat of the book as Jake goes on his quest. And while it is obvious that it was building up to a surprise finale meta-referenced in the story, the payoff left much to be desired as the pacing meandered towards the end, which was frustrating to see the main character go through since apparently he couldn't figure out something that was repeatedly beating him over the head.

It wasn't what I expected and the beginning got my hopes up, but I never cared enough to have any skin in the game. It's not for me, but it could very well be for you, especially if you like NCIS.

A struggling novelist steals the plot of his next book from a former student--and a lot of guilt/hand-wringing/internal monologues ensue. I found the main character's life as a struggling writer and professor to be believable and pretty interesting. Unfortunately, the bulk of the book is fixated on the stolen plot--and before it's revealed we're led to believe that it's something earth-shattering...in reality, it's familiar if you've watched the first season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". The actual book is OK even if you don't go along with the greatness of the story within the story, but it relies on the main character being a dumb-dumb in order to execute its predictable final twists. P.S. There is no way Steven Spielberg would direct a movie based on the book within the book--maybe David Fincher?

Started off really slow but I progressively became enraptured with the story. I found the ending to be very predictable but there were minor twists that kept me reading until the end.
