Edgar Rice Burroughs was one of the worst writers ever paid to produce—and he produced piles. He relied on the tritest of expressions, could only work with the flattest of characters, and never met an adverb he didn't overuse. Page 7 has momentarily, comfortably, suddenly, recently, equally bored (twice in consecutive sentences), slyly and in the same sentence lazily. People's faces are forever turning pink or red or white. No oen ever "says" when he can cry, reply, answer, interrupt, urge, ejaculate. Here's a sample sentence: Could any one thing have further bound Jane Porter to her promise to Clayton it would have been in the nature of some such misfortune as this overtaking him.
