Just hop on the coach and go for the ride with Unbury Carol! It’s a little slow going at first as you meet several characters but things really pick up in the second half.
Carol has this condition where she falls into a super deep sleep that to anyone who doesn’t know about it, makes it look like she’s dead. Carol falls into this state and her husband tries to get her buried as quickly as possible to be free of her and to acquire her wealth and property. Little does he know, she has an infamous outlaw ex-boyfriend who’s on his way to rescue her, confronting the guilt he has for leaving her after finding out about her state.
Unbury Carol is a thrilling and creepy horror/western combo that explores regret, guilt, revenge, desire, hope and love.

I received a copy of this book from my local library because I was one of the first to register for the author's live panel discussion. The event is tonight so I was anxious to finish the book in time to really be able to absorb the discussion. I have not read Bird Box, which is the book that got this author on the map. I was expecting something along the lines of thriller/horror but this ended up being more a western-romance damsel in distress type story with a side of paranormal/psychosis. Essentially a woman suffers from a condition that causes her to slip in a deep coma and appear dead to everyone else. No one knows this secret but her husband, who of course wants to send her off to the afterlife so he can inherit her immense wealth and property. What he doesn't know, is that her old flame, a famous outlaw, also knows her secret. So when Carol inevitably falls into her condition, her husband makes his move and convinces the town she is dead. And as a townfolk prepare to bury Carol six feet under, her outlaw rides to save her.
To be honest, at the beginning I was bored as the story seemed to move very slowly and instead of this time being used to develop the world we are in, it seemed to be just repetitive anecdotes about life on the Trail. Some interesting characters are created in this story that never fully develop as much as I would like. I kept reading out of sheer will and hopes that there would be some huge western blow out at the end. The story did become more unsettling and dreadful as I progressed, yet the ending was super underwhelming for me. All in all, it was meh, however I could see a cool spaghetti western developed out of this.

Is there anything scarier than being buried alive?
Another great book by Malerman. Very Stephen King-esque only less wordy and more suspenseful. Couldn’t put it down but kept sidelining it to make it last.

This is a hard book to categorize. It feels like a Western, but the Carol chapters offer a hint of horror. While it is a slow book, I enjoyed reading. I think this book suffers for low ratings because readers can't help but to compare it to Bird Box, which does Unbury Carol a huge disservice.
I think to label this book strictly as horror does a disservice to the plot and the writing. There are certainly a number of horror aspects, but confining it to the genre oversimplifies this story.
I do love a good western, especially a Weird Fiction Western. While maybe not Weird fiction, it was definitely weird and fun. It probably could have been cut a little shorter, but I had a really great time reading this.
I found the world building, with the snaking spiderwebs of hired guns, middle men, and outlaws to be really engaging and cool to read about.
