LOVED this - Seemed like a Stephen King, and it's supposed to be a take on Sleeping Beauty. Til the end I was trying to figure it out, and even afterward I spent time thinking and reading about it. There are some truly scary parts of this; I was impressed by the writing. I liked this more than The Bird Box, the only other of Malerman's novels I've read, though I get that this one won't be for everyone.

I liked Bird Box, so I was curious to read this latest one by its author. It is pretty gruesome in some parts (I had to skip several pages whenever Smoke was involved), but it is also such a creative story. The female characters are strong, and there is a neat twist at the end. The whole book details the race against time for Carol’s savior to rescue her from being buried alive, so it is a suspenseful read.

I guess I wasn’t really expecting a “western” from this novel. I loved [b:Bird Box|18498558|Bird Box|Josh Malerman|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1383949470s/18498558.jpg|26186624] so I wanted to jump on this book since it’s by the same author. But I can see why this book has a much lower star rating than other books. It’s one of those books where I might have been better off not finishing it but I wanted to finish it just to see if it got much better and wanted to find out what happens in the end.
Yeah, looking back, I should have DNF’ed this one… Sheesh, what did I just listen to?

Audiobook narrator [a:Dan John Miller|2090540|Dan John Miller|https://s.gr-assets.com/assets/nophoto/user/m_50x66-82093808bca726cb3249a493fbd3bd0f.png] rating: 4 stars
He’s actually pretty good at narrating this book. I just wasn’t into the story, unfortunately.

Enjoyed it but a little vague on a couple of plot points at the end I would have liked the answer to.

I didn’t know what to expect when I began this book because of my love for Bird Box, but in the end, it won me over. I absolutely loved the premise and the old west setting of this story. There were times in the middle that got a bit slow and repetitive, but I’m so glad I stuck with it. If you want a horror not that’s not too scary, but still unsettling and suspenseful, then try this.

I had no idea this was a western, and probably wouldn't have chosen it if I knew, but it was so good!!

Cool idea: Let's have the titular protagonist and her struggle be the most interesting aspect of the book, but focus instead entirely on the boring men in her life to the extent that the climactic moment that the entire book has been motivated toward for Carol happens OFF-SCREEN.

Josh Malerman saw one episode of Deadwood and was like "ooh, yeah, that."
