Holy shit. I knew the life of a child actor wasn't great, but damn, this girl really went through it. Jennette's story is told in such a humorous, yet heartbreaking way that there were many points I laughed with her, and others I wanted to cry for her. I had no idea everything she went through and makes you really think about the treatment of child actors. I used to love iCarly growing up, but after this and Quite on Set came out, it really has tainted my favorite shows growing up after learning all the shit the actors were put through.

I don't want to write or criticize too much as it was a very emotional memoir and the author's experiences are valid just as they are. I will, however, say that it was shockingly revelatory. Watching her TV show when I was a kid, I never thought that all that she talks about in this book might have been going on behind the scenes. It is also extremely touching and relatable how she saw her mom as a goddess (my wording) but then to, over time and with a lot of therapy, realize the profoundly negative impact her mom actually had on her life.
I'm really proud of Jennette McCurdy for the work she has put in for herself and for sharing her story with the world because it can (and probably has) helped other people in similar situations realize and cope with their similar family dynamics and unhealthy coping mechanisms. It is certainly not for the faint-hearted though, so please check the trigger warnings before reading. (The most prominent ones that come to my mind are family abuse and eating disorders.)

Themes: family abuse, eating disorders, child acting, therapy, toxic relationships
