is it insane to say this book made me introspect a little about my relationship with my mother? i won’t get into the details—God knows if she’ll ever stumble across my profile 💀

as for the book itself: yeah, i’m glad her mom died too. i genuinely can’t wrap my head around how a mother could treat her child like that. sure, there’s no manual for motherhood, but at some point the abuse and neglect just become... absurd. it’s heartbreaking and infuriating.

CW: Eating disorder, abuse of a minor, mental health OCD and schizophrenia, alcohol abuse

I listened to this on audiobook and I wonder if I would have perceived it differently if I didn’t. Jennette’s delivery was very monotone even while discussing very brutal parts of her past.

The chapters are really short it’s almost like reading diary entries or scenes in a show/movie.

Jennette is pretty graphic about her explanation of what she went through so be weary if any of those content warnings would trigger something for you.

Her account is raw and unfiltered and I hope being open has helped her heal. As a mother myself it reminds me how important it is to take care of my own mental and emotional health so that I can best love and support my children.

Felt like a story a friend was telling me. I really liked the way it was written and the pace of everything. Had to take a slight break from it sometimes only because the mommy trauma was relatable.

‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’ features the same theme all solid ones do: parental trauma. McCurdy explores how her childhood as an actor led to her years-long battles with alcoholism and eating disorders. She shares a very realistic, gradual path to recovery, complicated by jobs, shitty partners, and her mom’s actual death along the way.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read. McCurdy’s straightforward, stream-of-consciousness writing was appealing. Her candor and dry wit were appreciated during her discussion of dark topics.

it’s a 4 star book but deserves to be in my 5 star list

Definitely be prepared for it to be triggering. It's a story of real abuse. But it's amazingly written. Every detail included and excluded is great. She knows just how much info to give that's relevant and moves the story forward even when writing about real events.

As someone who lost their abusive father to cancer it is also fairly relatable and helps me feel better about the complicated feelings I also had surrounding his death.
