I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

Good god. McCurdy’s writing is genius in this book, she tackles topics that many others would butcher but she lived them so she has no choice but to tell the truth; the whole brutal, gut twisting, illustrative truth. I’ve read this twice now and I’ll inevitably read it again. There’s no limit to what people will do for money, or to claw their way higher, and children’s lives, education, health and safety are no obstacles.

McCurdy's story is honest, gripping, and terribly sad, yet she tells it in a way that's compelling, interesting, and often funny. This book is full of vulnerability and does an excellent job of conveying the experience of abuse and psychological disorders. I wish I could read it for the first time again and again.

This book was fast paced but in a way that aided the progression of the memoir. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a book in this genre. You not only learn so much about Jennette McCurdy herself, but also about the environment she was in and the relationships in her family. It can be intensely emotional and sad, and it can also sprinkle in some hope and inspiration for the future.

Visceral. Validating. Everything I wanted it to be.

As someone who grew up watching iCarly and Nickelodeon, this was a complete reality check. We've known for a while that there was a sinister underbelly to Nickelodeon, but it really sets in to hear a first-person account of someone who was in the thick of it. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook to hear it narrated by Jennette herself. Raw, emotional, and probably triggering for many, but it's very worth it if you can handle the content.

DID NOT FINISH: 10%

Did not finish as my therapist advised it would likely be too triggering for me as I am still working through childhood CPTSD and am only six months no-contact with my mother.
