This book should come with some serious content warnings for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, eating disorders, and sexual harassment. Listening to Jeanette read this on audiobook was heartbreaking. It is so vulnerable and brave of her to write her story this way. She has been through so much in her life, her resilience is kind of astounding. Writing the book as a progression of her own thoughts and viewpoints over the course of her life was crazy to experience, especially the ways that she excuses her mother’s abusive behavior and is such deep denial of the manipulation her mother uses against her. I thought this book really shed light on the duality and difficulties of having a parent who is clearly engaging in abusive behavior but how a child will cling to the moments of connection and love to forgive or move past those behaviors. Jeanette basically did this for her mother literally until the last chapter of the memoir. Several of the experiences she describes were truly upsetting and shocking. While she did find moments to bring lightness and humor to the story, I would say this is quite a tough listen/read overall with not a lot of opportunities to be funny due to the content of her story.

It was a very hard book to get into at first because of how open and full of life it was. Life is difficult and at times dark and you’d rather look away/hide from it. Jennette’s writing didn’t come across as fake, it was like listening to a friend over a coffee about the ups and downs of life.

Didn’t feel fully baked. Reads like a trauma dump. Feels raw and honest, but not fully processed trauma that could have benefitted from a decade of personal reflection.

I truly admire Ms. McCurdy for finding and sticking with the strength to heal after abuse. So much abuse. It’s not easy. This book gives me so much hope for my own future away from abusers. I love how Ms. McCurdy doesn’t shy away from her truth, even stories that don’t make her look the best. It really endeared her to me and other readers.
