I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy

emotional fast-paced

I’m Glad My Mom Died is such a powerful read. I listened to the audiobook, which is narrated by her and she does a fantastic job of it. The writing style is simple but brilliant and really affective - the way her emotions are described, her thinking at the time, and her age reflects as we listen to her grow up.

I didn’t know much about this going in so there are a lot of trigger warnings. They range from her mom showering her still at age 16 to encouraging anorexia in an 11 year old to calling her daughter a s1ut, disowning her and asking for money all in the same message.

I’m so happy she’s in a good place now 🥹

This was a brutally honest memoir with a lot of ups and downs. Her narration was great, and the storytelling was equal parts fascinating, sad, and inspiring.

Difficult at times but necessarily so. Long, but because it is thorough. Jennette does a great job at narrating events from her life matter-of-factly, showing how normalised certain extreme behaviours were for her. She's been through a lot and her account of it all puts you right in her shoes, so it can feel gruelling at times, but that's the point. Her audiobook narration can be a little fast at times and mumbly but I think that's just the way she talks! You've got to keep up with her. I'm glad she wrote this and seems in a better place now.
