It started off well, but once we got into the trials I became so confused. Her illness is completely forgotten, we’re constantly thrown into a trial that as a reader we don’t even realize is a trial. The dialogue and action is very confusing to follow. DNF at 80%

The stars are dying
3/5
If you like acotar or serpent and the wings of night and the writing style of caraval then you might like this book.

I love a book with a star focus and it was one of the big things I enjoyed in this read. I did get hooked in the start, my interest in it dwindled though and the writing style made me feel lost. Usually the trials in a book hooks me though these ones they didn’t stand out for me. Nyte is a mysterious dark mmc and he even had an eerie feeling to him which I enjoyed though the romance between them both had me questioning how these two characters were even in love, and it kept going from love to hate and it was like just make up your mind. a few twists and turns which surprised me throughout however I felt certain scenes weren’t needed and should have been swapped with their background story.
I’m going to read book 2 because I need to know how their romance ends.

Fav characters zath Nyte

DNF - couldn’t get into it at all. Really struggled with her just going along with what a random shadow guy kept telling her. Idk not for me I guess. Maybe I will try it again later

I wanted to like this book, I really did. The book art and pages are beautiful and the inside book blurb is so interesting- FMC has no memory and competes in what could be compared to the Hunger Games in order to grant her realm freedom from the vampires. On top of this, I really liked the character’s names because they were different and I liked how she spelled them.

Starting with the Prologue I was confused, so I kept reading, thinking I just needed more of the story and it would eventually make sense. Then I read more, and I had more questions. Questions kept building on questions, and I kept hoping for some big epiphany that would make it all make sense….but it never came. Which characters are good? Who should I be rooting for? How does magic in this universe work? Where did the celestials come from? Even now, I want to like the book- but it was very chaotic, characters, the world building, motivations, politics….all chaotic and disjointed. Maybe it’s just me, and I just need to read it again? Or maybe it was over my head? I don’t know, but what I do know is that this book could have been magnificent, but for me, it was just meh. It didn’t land well at all. It was VERY close to a DNF for me, and I think I will pass on Book 2. I hope you guys like it better than I did.

The world building was great, but the characters seemed flat and static. All of the “plot twists” were apparent since the first chapter.

This book started out with so much potential and then just turned into fuck all lol. The big twist was Nyte was secretly Nightsdeath? Like, girl, c'mon, let's use our brain here. And obviously she’s the star maiden and obviously the pills she thought she needed were poison. The trials she had to face were like nothing- a huge let down that this thing they build up as like the hunger games is just a mind test where you decide to say no and win. For all 5. Each trial is like 2 pages long. And then the last 100 pages are just whiplash of confusion and what the fuck is going on- we love Nyte, but we hate him, betrayal, but we trust him, everyone's lying, but I love everyone so much, I've secretly been keeping my friend's soul this whole time. Like what the fuck is going on.
