had to sit on this one for a minute but yeah. five stars. incredible sick vile organ of a book. very few moments of wobble, lung-crushingly sure of what it's doing, understands and engages with its smallest details with a roaring adrenaline surety. I don't want to re-read it for a while but I will re-read it. it's already scrabbling at my brain.
the first bonus short story is I think also a really specific masterpiece.

this book is completely fucked. truly in every sense of the word this book is *horrible*. it took me longer to read than expected simply because it's legitimately difficult to stomach reading through this at points and that's coming from someone who is rarely fazed by media. it is in the service of legitimately sharp analysis about neurodivergence, disability, and masculine socialization, but also there's a level of edginess to this where i'm not sure what is necessary for the sake of Truly Toxic Yaoi and what is reveling in depravity for the sake of depravity. for instance, there is a lengthy and descriptively graphic sexual assault scene that is probably one of the most fucked up things i've ever read.
it was joked to me that the book is trauma-informed in that the author is informed on how best to traumatize the reader, and that's pretty accurate! it's really sickening. much of the book is exhilarating in a way that is impossible to put down yet simultaneously stomach churning shock content. there's a real type of Sicko that can love this book, but i don't think it's me even if i..... enjoyed (?) this. much of my enjoyment comes from how eloquently metaphorical the descriptions are which weaves beautiful poetry and biting commentary with dark comedy and Trauma, but in equal measure the prose is what held me back from loving this more. it's incredibly confusing to read from a spatial-temporal standpoint, or even just knowing who is talking. that, and parts of the conclusion did not fully land for me with how underdeveloped oneone was. a book that will stick with me regardless.
