With his marriage coming to an end, Finn MacLeod gives up his career in the police and returns home to the Isle of Lewis, dreaming only of restoring his parents’ derelict croft house. His hopes of escaping the world outside do not last long when a body is recovered from a peat bog. The body is at first thought to be centuries old until they notice an Elvis Tattoo on an arm. There was so much promise here with the bleak geography of the Island, the hardship endured by its inhabitants, and an old man remembering his abusive childhood. Adding to all that is a mystery to be solved. The story is well told but the mystery is less than engaging and I didn’t feel the author made enough of the world in which it all takes place. Much loved by many but just an OK read for me.

It can hardly be called a revelation that I've cracked why I didn't like the first Lewis Trilogy book because my review plainly stated I had very little interest in it's protagonist, the meandering Fin Macleod.
I wouldn't have even picked up #2 had it not been for the fact that the series was reduced like crazy on digital and I'd purchased the full series.

Thankfully, Mr Macleod takes a little more of a backseat role in this novel as we get our teeth into the backstory of a minor character from the previous book: Marsaili's father. Suffering from dementia, the reader follows along as Fin and Marsaili try to discover the life story of Tormod Macdonald, the father that Marsaili realises she never truly knew at all. Getting the island hopping story of this elderly man told through their investigation and his unfortunately wavering memory was an interesting tale that visited, once again, many locations of my own childhood.

I don't know why it took so long for me to read the second book of this series. I loved the first book. My feelings haven't changed with the second book. There is something about Peter May's writing that just captures me and sucks me in. I guarantee I won't wait as long for the last book.
